While fording a stream last week my rear wiper magically turned on....and stayed there. I eventually just unplugged the wiring harness in the rear gate to get it to turn off. Any ideas on how to fix it? It's obviously an electrical problem, but does anyone know where to start looking for a short? Winter is coming and I'd really like my rear wiper back.

My wife's truck had a broken ground wire, somewhere between the hatch and the jack storage area. With the key off, opening the hatch fed power from the light circuit to the ground side of other hatch components. Power then fed from there forward to everything else, it was weird. I suspect it went through the rear wiper somehow. The trim comes off the hatch easily. I fed a new ground through the flex tube and down to the jack storage area. Do you have a wiring diagram?

Multimeter? You should check if it's getting power from the switch. Once it's unplugged you can check if there's power on the ground side of the plug, that'd indicate a bad hatch ground.

What year Joe?

'93 FJ80, no lockers. I was afraid that I was going to have to test out the harness and the ground connections, I was just wondering if you guys knew of anything that tended to short out with regularity. Also, this started up when I was under 4 ft of water, so I'm sure that didn't help.

Joe:

I don't have a wiring diagram for your year (you can go online and download what you need for $10), but I would start with some of the connection points on the harness. Unplug them, blow them out with some air and reconnect. Without a diagram, you'll have to start with connections that were under water (ie was there water in the rear panels where the jack is)?

Cheers, Hugh
