I was wondering if people could post some pics of some after market rear seat belts they have put in the back of a BJ74. Mine came with after market seat belts installed and I want to be sure they are safe before I put my "little mudders" in the back.

Better yet does anyone know if their are places a guy could go and get them inspected by a professional in Edmonton. Would the fire department do this kind of inspection? I know they inspect infant car seats.

The pics are from inside and outside the wheel well and where the male end attaches in the center which is also where the rear seat attaches to the floor.

Any advice would be great, I just want to make sure my little ones are kept safe.

On my BJ70, the male end is attached on the rear seat intself.

Is there any holes on your BJ74 rear seat ?

Those definatly are not installed correctly. I have a guy here who is a certified F1 cage builder, he does all my seatbelt installs now - unfortunatly he is her ein Ottawa and that doesnt help you much.

He mounts them on the floor, there is a channel underneath the body that runs under he seat- he rills down through the floor, though the channel and makes a bracket plate that he attaches under that - then uses high strength bolts. A body would tear in half before his work lets go.

I figured they weren't right. I will have to track someone down in Edmonton to install them properly.

Thanks Louis

I had the oppotunity to view a 73 last week that had been rolled at about 60-70 kph(my guess). Probably too fast into a corner, all the tyres were ok
The factory roll bar deformed but offered some protection to the rear but the drivers position was not pretty
The 73 was a right off ,windscreen frame ,doors and FRP were all fawked
I wouldnt want to go down an embankment in a high speed spinning rollover:eek:

I dont think they would say anything if you improved it. Im sorry but those that Haggs posted are just plain ludicrous.
In an accident a human body can turn into 6x its own weight or more through dynamic loading (I think thats the term).
Thumbs up to you if you see a problem.
Any vehicle inspector who recommends they be fitted that way needs his head(and job) on the chopping block.

Ill be interested to know from Mreeksters experience if the bolt holes wil be there.

I agree that they are ludicrous. I have been doing some research to find a safe way for them to be installed. (I think I am going to track down what is in the BJ70 for rear seats and seat belts.)

I did contact Alberta Transportation and Transport Canada as for some direction to go in and they only stated that I should contact a dealership for information for the factory seat belts. When I told them that they do not come with factory seat belts all they said was that the all the law states is that if there are no factory installed then the occupants don't have to wear anyand if there are seatbelts installed they must be used by the occupants. They were not helpfull at all.

I also contacted Toyota Canada and this is what they said.
"Thank you for your recent correspondence.

We would like to take this opportunity to mention that all Toyota parts
must be purchased through a Toyota dealership. We suggest contacting
the Parts department at a Toyota dealership directly. They would be in
the best position to accurately identify the parts that you require,
and to provide information regarding pricing and availability.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us."

I have contacted several toyota dealerships in town here by email with no responses yet. So I am now going to begin contacting cruiser parts shops from here on mud.(which is probably where I should have started)

I feel for you:rolleyes: Its time to decide whether to go OEM like mreekster or get something fabbed up.
I would ask around and see how much an engineer wants for a design, some of them are not too bad sometimes.
