and just for clarification, is it okay to run the truck in four high, using the front wheels as drive wheels until i can get this problem fixed with the rear diff?
and my options are basicilly replacement, if the r&p is bad?
with the noises it is making, would putting a locker in make a difference? or is replacement the order of the day?
thanks,

If the rear is making noises it's not good to drag it around with the front. Whether you're putting power to the R&P by way of the engine via the driveshaft or by way of the wheels via the axle shafts you're still forcing a R&P to turn when it doesn't want to. I'm not an expert on third members (and I didn't sleep at a Holiday Inn last night) but I'm curious as to the pre load on the pinion nut and or the backlash of the R&P. Could be an adjustment issue.

Justin, install a new third member and be done with it.

He replaced the third with one I had. Although we had to mix and match some old side gears and spiders. I think a new lockright will fix his issues.

yeah, well, i'm still prolly going to put in a locker, but after going out to remove the rear driveshaft, in the light of day, (and this could only happen to me) the pinion nut was loose.
after a good solid crank down on the nut, no more noise from the back.
that's the way it goes for me folks. really bad luck, that sometimes isn't. now, to figure out why my brakes don't wanna work. but the rear diff isue is now resolved. except for installing a locker.
thanks to everybody for the input. you guys rock!!!
