So I have read about these.

I need to grind flat and then weld a patch.

Do I need the inert gas in there while I grind/weld or do I just put a bunch in there, wait, and then all the bad stuff is cleared out and I don’t need to worry?
Kinda nervous

If it were me I would first rinse with something that gasoline is soluble in and that is also soluble in water (gasoline is not soluble in water). Acetone or alcohol come to mind. Rinse out the gasoline with one of those and then rinse the tank with water. You could then purge with an inert gas to remove the oxygen if you're still nervous.

Yeah, be sure to get all the gas out first. A rinse out would be a good idea, or let it sit open for several days so everything can completely evaporate out. Stick your line into the tank coming from your oxygen displacing gas of choice and then yes, let it run in there for several minutes before making sparks and then leave it on the entire time you do the work and while it cools.

Okay! I didn’t blow up!

Gave it a couple days with a bunch of hours with a shop vac blowing into it.
Boy, I’ll tell you I was really tempted to put a match up to it! The first night! Something’s wrong with me.
I waited and got lazy.
No dry ice.
No exhaust piping.
Put a paper on a broom stick and……..
Nothing.
Game on!
Filled two old send and return holes.
Made a new ‘hat’ for the pump and gauge. Welded it in.
Made a little strap thing to hold tank down to the carriage.
Welded brackets for the carriage to the frame. Old tank used to hang on the bed sheet metal. :/

Now painting tank. ‘Blue by you’

Pics to come.

My fuel gauge sender was in with sheet metal screws and always leaked. So I got to practice with my buddies plasma cutter and welded some nuts to make for a tighter seal and hopefully stop that leak.

Always looking for the chance to practice!

Had to move the gauge sender and put the pump in but the access panel did not line up. There is a cross member on the 80 frame that moved the tank back. Closed off the old hole and created two new ones that I hope now are accessible through the hatch. Did some measuring so I hope it now lines up.

Welded two brackets to hold the tank to the cradle.

And painted.
