Real time weekend get-away help...

GREETINGS SC- Upstate Cruisers!

Need a little real time help on selecting a get-a-way weekend and I thought you folks might be able to help. The North Meets South in the Blue Ridge Mtns SOUNDS AWESOME but I can't get away for this! Damn...

Any who... I'm looking to spend a little time in the NE GA mountains or any place really in SC area for a few days. Do a little hiking, rent a canoe, hot tubbing, great scenery... you know the romantic stuff. A little lite wheelin is a possibility!

Does anybody have a favorite resort or better yet a Bed and Breakfast? Cost not really an issue (well a little one perhaps)!

If anybody has some recommendations I'd appreciate it!

I've rented houses in the Clayton area in the past. Nice little town. Close to Tallulah (sp) gourge which is a great place to hike around. Lots of hiking, some trails around Warwomen Rd, and Clayton is a pretty neat little town to hang around.

I haven't stayed in Highlands NC, but it comes highly recommended as well. Driven through it and it looks great too. All pretty close.

Highlands, NC is cool if you are looking for a small mountain town. There is a small restaraunt on the main street with the best breakfast I have ever had.

There are some nice cabins in the Franklin, NC area.

Asheville is always fun.

Having grown up in Franklin, it is definitely a good little town. Highlands is smaller and more touristy, but also more expensive. Plenty of hiking (App. Trail passes very close to Franklin), Nantahala isn't far for good rafting,

It's been 10+ years since I lived there, but my fam still does. If you want names of B&B's let me know, I'll find out. Also, smkymtn is in Sylva, and the small town of Dillsboro is pretty cool. There is a train that runs through there. It was the one used in the Fugitive, and you can still see the movie wreckage from the train.

In NE Ga, you might try Hiawassee. Right on the lake, plenty of houses to rent/places to stay. Only about 45 min from Franklin, Clayton, etc. Hiking is close, as is Beasley's knob.

I enjoyed a weekend in Bryson City NC called the Freymont Inn. It's old and homey, old style mountain inn. It's got a great dining room and the rates may seem high but they include three meals a day which are quite tasty and service is great. The commons room is big and comfy with games, a great porch viewing the Smokies and a huge fireplace. You usually can meet and get to know other visitors, many of whom have been coming there for years, often the same weekend every year.
Bryson City is at the edge of the Smokies so there are good rides and activities around including the Smoky Mtn Railroad which originates there.
They close for the winter, after Thanksgiving I believe. They have a website.
Just my two cents, there are millions of neat places in the NC and GA mtns but I really thought the Freymont was rather unique.

Another kinda cool place is Hot Springs NC. Near the TN line north from Asheville, it has natural hot springs (oh really?) so hot tubbing is a given. A river runs through it, the French Broad I believe, and the Appalachian Trail passes very close by so there's your hiking. They used to do an old frontier style bank robbery/shoot out downtown on Saturday night with lots of gunsmoke and drama.

We have a house in Sky Valley, and it's nice for a weekend if you just want to hike and chill. Not much in the way of food though. Highlands is a favorite of ours for the reasons given here.

Check out Blairsville too...they have some nice cabins and BEASLEY KNOB for your wheelin' pleasure.

I live a few minutes from Chimney Rock and have tons of trails for hiking and mountain biking all over. There is also a bunch of trails off the Blue Ridge Parkway that are more seculuded (sp). As far as BnB's there are a bunch around and if you decide to come this way send me a PM and i can name a handful to contact. There is also a lot to do in and around Asheville.

I like the Highlands too. Took the family there last year for a long weekend. We had fun going to all the water falls and walking around the town.

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE REPLYS!

Headed out this weekend to NC and will visit most spots mentioned here! I'm pretty much an easy going guy and don't plan much but my GF wants a plan (like where we gonna stay!). The best part is the journey I try to tell her but... oh well. Now to decide on a romantic place (hotel, b&b, motel 6) to rest our weary heads.

You can do the Tree House honeymoon thing here Edisto River treehouse camping and wildlife refuge in South Carolina, canoeing and kayaking trips

Also some great spots for cabins with hot tubs in north Georgia mountains but sounds like you got an idea already.

Try the Balsam Mountain inn- cool old hotel- right next to the Blue ridge parkway and close to everything- quick jump to Sylva, Whittier, Bryson, Grt Smky Mtn Nat park has some of the best hiking in the country. There are some places in Sylva also, its the beginning of leaf season so we will start getting busier.

lots of good suggestions here...... there is a B n B in Fairview just minutes south of asheville on my family's old farmland. Awesome place and service. Fair includes a breakfast each day at 9 and free snacks and drinks 24/7 plus complimentary wine in the evenings. Honeymooners suite has a giant hottub This leaves you close to asheville for the city life, and not too far a drive from hot springs, tons of trails nearby.

search romantic asheville , asheville b n b for a great list of cabins and secret resorts. Another favorite of mine is the Celo Valley in but its a lil further east towards mt mitchell.

On the note of Bryson City.....no hot tubbing but some cold tubing on deep creek is hard to beat.

Montford area is great if you want to be in the city and walk to diff locations. Only drawback of closer to asheville is less places to wheel. If you end up closer to the GA border for recreation then i second looking at highlands/cashiers/glenville area.
