I had an issue arise about an hour ago I'd like some opinions on before I drive up to asher's tomorrow morning.

Truck Stats

1968 FJ40
F155 engine, never rebuilt
Weber 38 carb
Running 20w50 Castrol, coolant level's fine, oil pressure and engine temps are normal.

Problem -

Drove the 40 in to work today, it ran fine on the way there. On the way home I was coming down I-29 by the airport. The truck was up to temp and running fine when I heard a small bang (like a small backfire, but from the engine bay) followed by a drastic increase in engine noise. Now whenever the engine is under load (acceleration or uphill grades, 1/4 throttle or greater) I'm getting a very loud cam sound. It's a tic-tic sound, coming from the driver's side of the engine bay. It's not present at idle, reving in neutral, or during compression braking. Only under load. If you've ever hear an old tired full size farm truck accelerating, it's the same "metallic" cam sound, not the loping exhaust note.

My first thoughts are cracked exhaust manifold or manifold/exhaust connection. I've got the remote oil filter and carburetor in the way to really be able to see the manifold well. I'm going to let it cool down and poke around some more. The noise certainly sounds like it's coming from the driver's side. When it first occurred I was worried about valve or pushrod problems due to the type of sound, but as far as I can tell it's coming from the opposite (exhaust) side of the motor. I can't be certain because I can't reproduce it in the driveway - only when moving under load.

Any suggestions, ideas, or w.a.g's are welcome. I drove it home to Bonner Springs with no problems other than the noise, so unless I find something later tonight I'll be bringing it up tomorrow. However, I'd really like to have a better idea of what it is before I get it back out on the highway.

Thanks

this sounds exactly like the leak at the egr down pipe on a 2f (fj60). pardon my ignorence but I'm not familiar with a "f155", it may be completely diff.

the bang could ahve been the gasket blowing out and the tick tick is exhaust blowing out...Or a cracked manafold...

My 60 does this. I will replace the gasket then reinstall the down pipe and torque everything up and it is quiet and drives like a dream...then oneday it will blow out and start ticking again.

I make a homade gasket out of copper and it lasted a hell of a lot longer but I'm starting to notice the ticking coming back...time to retorque those studs.

what ignition system? i've seen distributers blow up like that.. Gas fumes go back into them and KaPOw..

Put your hand around the exhaust, feel for the leak. Pull the EGR hose and feel for a ton or not of blowby? Those are simple checks. Might have just been a backfire and your wanting to hear stuff now..

Just got back from work - again. Right after I posted I got called in to fix a machine. Haven't had a chance to investigate the cruiser further, but I'm headed out to take a look in a minute.

F155 is the immediate predecessor to the 2f, 3.9 vs 4.2 liter but otherwise similar in design. I'm not familiar with EGR. Manifold goes straight to single 2" pipe - no cat, no tubes, etc.

No way it was just a backfire - the new noise is loud enough to overpower tire whine from boggers at 70mph. Truck used to be relatively quiet and chugged like a tractor. Now it sounds like a Ford 460 with 200,000 original miles and straight pipes.

Distributor is the old vacuum retard (primitive emissions) style. As suggested in the tech links, I've disconnected the vacuum line (which has improved the vacuum as a whole and thereby improved response from my quirky weber carb)

I'm going to go look for cracks/leaks. I'll let you know if I find anything. Thanks for the replies so far.

I've got a large volume of exhaust coming from underneath the manifold at the turn for cylinder 5 collector. I went all over the truck looking for other issues and didn't find anything new, so I'm assuming that's it.

Thanks for the replies. If I don't have any further issues, then I'll see some of you tomorrow.
