I have a couple of old Ramsey REP8000 winches I picked up at the local salvage yard several years back. I was going to clean them up and work on getting one good working winch out of the two.

Are these a decent winch and enough winch for my FZJ 80 Cruiser? I know some run 8000 lb winches but a lot prefer bigger for the 80 series.

Just wondering if it would be worth my time fooling with these.

Thanks.

Not a bad winch to start with, kinda small for an 80 series, though. Make sure you get a snatch block and keep it in your rig. I ran my Ramsey Rep8000 on my 80 from 2001 when I got my ARB, until last April when I picked up my '81 Mini. It's perfect for a Mini truck. Unless you really bury your 80, it'll help you get out of most jams. Ramsey's are good American built quality winches. Mine is over 20 years old and still going strong. My Badland (Harbor Freight) 12k replaced the 8k Ramsey on my 80 and I noticed the difference immediately. With the 8k you need to spool out to the lower wraps to get good power. Not so with the 12k. IIRC, it's rated at 6k on the 4th wrap, which is pretty much all spooled in.

Damn fine winch.
