Radio Lights Out Only

The lights on the radio have been out for a while...I was able to let it go as I've been more focused on the FJ40 repairs, but tonight was driving the 4runner and it bugged me they didn't come on.

I assume the fix option is just to remove the entire dash area and pull the radio out to make bulb replacements as I don't think it is fuses since everything else (all other light) works perfectly on the car.

How many bulbs are back there...I doubt they would all go out at once. Is this something else I'm not thinking of?

I hate taking apart the dash of the modern 4 runner (why I like working on the old FJ way better) to look at this in fear of I'll break the dash / plastic tabs/ etc.

Let me know if there is simple trick that I'm missing.

I had the same issue with mine. Occasionally if I whacked the dash next to the radio the lights would come back on momentarily. There are no bulbs you can replace. On mine it wound up being a bad connection where the radio plugged into the factory amplifier behind it. I messed with it a few times then finally gave up and installed an aftermarket Sony head unit with built in bluetooth and ipod controls. My wife loves it.

Had any luck? My dad has an 01 with navigation. The actual radio part doesn't illuminate when lights are on and according to a local radio repair place bulbs are fine and its getting power to the radio.

I haven't messed with it. I've got used to it now that I probably won't ever deal with it.

Thanks for the reply! Just so you know it appears to not be limited to the FJ's. My dads truck is a Land Cruiser..
