I am installing a new radio in my FJ60 and in the process repairing some of the wiring that the PO destroyed. I haven't found a constant 12V in the mass of wires behind where the radio used to be. Is there one? I don't see one on the wiring diagram that I have. Can I steal one from another source, ie cig lighter? Anyone else have the same issue?

Yep, steal it from the fuse box or the battery. If you use the battery make sure you put a 15 amp inline fuse.

dome light is the only one i can think of that has power when the key is off. I run mine to the battery(or aux fuse panel)

the in-line fuse is a definite must, especially if your head unit is putting out any kind of wattage.

look for the original factory radio wires to the right of the gear shift levers, up underneath the dash, behind the glove box. you'll have to pull the glove box and it also helps to remove the piece of dash that covers the climate controls as well as the small plastic storage cubby to gain easier access to the radio cutout and the wires therein. i can't remember the color of the switched hot lead (i want to say it is brown and i think the constant hot is white w/ a black stripe - don't quote me on that) but the factory body manual has the wiring diagram which is invaluable for identifying the right wires to tap into.

Guess i should have clarified..I did find the original harness. The switched 12V is red with like green or blue tracer and the ground is white with a black tracer. Along with those two wires, I found the driver side speaker wires. It is kinda funny what the PO did to make it work. Not quite sure what he was thinking. He had a wire going to the fuse box and it was stuck in the fuse box between a fuse and a the prong that holds it in. For the ground, he used the original bracket that hold the radio and had a wire screwed on to it. In the Haynes manual, it shows three to four constant hots at the fuse box. I think it lists them as "A-D". I think I will use one of these. Now, if I crimp into one of the fuse box wires, do I have to put an inline fuse in also?

All my wiring was messed up so I just ran a new wire right from the battery and took that non-constant wire from the deck and hooked it to a lighted switch where the choke is on the fj's cause I'm always using the radio and hate leaving the key in

mine is straight to the battery too, BUT it should have a inline fuse because if it grounds out with no fuse it could start a fire

VTCruiser...I went through the same problem and have been in the process of making custom brackets. Do you have the ability to fab stuff? I can send you the drawing and the way that I plan to mount mine. I should have it complete by the end of the week. Let me know. I may be able to make a set for you if it turned out ok for a little $, enough to cover shipping and my time. I have material readily available. Let me know. Can send pics of mine when I finish.
