what would usually happen if you put more than whats reccommended?
 
An overcharge results in the high-side pressure being too high, which means it won't cool very well and it may trip the high pressure switch, shutting down the compressor. In a worst case scenario, it takes out the front compressor seal or blows up the discharge hose.:doh: Now it may not affect you very much, being in Minnesota (at least till it gets warmer), but here in Arizona, it's important to have the correct charge all year round.

A little too little is better than a little too much I think. If your doing it yourself can't you just use the old charge it until the sight glass is clear then stop?

x2. It is right around a range of 30-32 oz. depending on hi side pressures.
