It looks as though i will be relocating to california with my gx within weeks. Where do you purchase the green off road tags that are required to explore the trails and mountains?

In California, street legal vehicles do not need a green sticker when off-road.

You can drive your normal vehicles offroad. Offroad only vehicles require green sticker.

Yep, no green sticker required for off road adventure if the vehicle is licensed in any state. Many trails are marked with signs letting you know it it is authorized for access for horses, hikers or Mt. bikers, skiers and snow mobiles and if the trail is authorized for motor vehicle travel either motorcycle or 4X4. You may need a valid Land Pass OR a valid fishing licence to park at certain trail head areas.

You'll also need a "SNO-PARKS permit" to park at state maintained parking areas during the Sierras snow season (Nov 1 to May 30)
