What has been your experience with cats and leather furniture?

We bought a leather sectional and chair that are being delivered next Saturday. My pussy cat sometimes sharpens her claws on the regular couch. Will she do the same on leather? Can anything be done to keep them from scratching leather furniture? TIA.

My wife and I bought a brand new couch and love seat years ago and the cat scratch them up within a couple of days. We had to bring them back in order for them to fix them, but you could still see the repairs. This was primarily an out door cat that would sneak in from time to time.

get a scratching post and trim their nails regularly. they will scratch whatever they want to, so just keep their nails short.

x2, give them a place to scratch and scold them if they do it elsewhere. It works wonders. Double stick tape also is a great deterrent.

Cats like to scratch thing they can grab with their claws, so I doubt leather will be an inviting target. They will climb on anything, since cats use their claws to climb, some scratches are inevitable.

Post up the results, I've always wondered how cats would react to leather furniture.

my leather couch was well worn to begin with, so i wasn't too worried about it. none of the cats have scratched on it, but when they jump and run around on it, they dig in their claws so the armrests are fawked.

I've found that the best upholstery for cats is micro fiber. They can't get a hold of it, so they leave it alone. Any type of open weave will be fawked, and quickly.

The best way to keep my wifes cats from clawing the couch and chairs is to have my 3 beagles guard them. LOL

 Brilliant idea!
