Rebuilding the PTO OEM winch and will need new cable, don't know squat about winches and was thinking of the lighter synthetic rope...can that be used? The rating on the winch is very weak, only 2200 lbs per the manual or at least thats what the shear pin is rated at. The drum supports about 160 feet of cable.

Thanks
Keith

I've gone over the argument about 100 times with people about synthetic vs steel. They both have their upsides, but the thing that did it for me was exposure to sun. A steel cable will last a lifetime of sitting there and still be mostly as good as the day it was bought if you don't use it. A synthetic line will degrade with exposure to sunlight, with some people saying they are only good for a couple years before they noticed a tendency for them to start falling apart.

I would love to run synthetic to save a bunch of weight, but I still have the steel until they can show me that something I pay $500 for will last as long as something I pay $80 for.

Where is the shear pin located?

Synthetic line is a butt load lighter. If you had a winch cover UV wouldn't be an issue.
