My current Saginaw setup uses a remote reservoir...however, as I've researched (and delayed) purchasing an aftermarket/larger replacement, I see they all have the return line on the res itself, not on the pump can. IMO, this helps cool the fluid by directly mixing it with the can reserve, and not shoving it right into the pump....

any thoughts? Worth experimenting to rework the stock res for larger capacity AND put on a fitting for returning fluid?

(now I just gotta find some 3.5" ID exhaust tubing...)

BTW: if anyone is shopping for an inline filter for an automatic tranny or for your power steering, NAPA p/n 1-8514 is what I used...list is $28.53 each, and takes a day to get in. 3/8" fittings in and out, magnet/filter specific for PS and AT's.

Can you explain a bit more? i understand the want to have a larger reservoir, but unclear on how you want to go about doing so?

Curious as the current PS pump placement in my cruiser allows next to no room for even possibly expanding the reservoir. the bolt throught he waterpump and one using the exhaust manifold is the brackets i am using.

This is using the most common all in one pump.
Just a suggestion and it kind sounds easier then what i think you are looking at trying, why not adapt the top of the PS pump to run as a sealed can, then barb it to a a remote res, with a return line in the remote. either weld on a large bung over the open top then go with a pipe fitting to a smaller barb, or cut the top off weld a flat piece of sheet metal with the threaded for barb section and your done.

As for your 3.5" id tubing, i would think that a piece of 3.5" EMT electrical conduit about 14 gauge wall, i believe would be dang close to your ID ( i have some just got to go measure for you).

my res is already remote....it's located next to the radiator right now. I have already cut the can in half and plan to extend the length by 4-5" for more volume. I do NOT have an all on one canned ham pump.

If you've shopped for aftermarket stuff, they all return into the can, not to the pump directly. The aftermarket pumps have a pressure line and a return line. The stock remote res cans have a pressure line, a large diameter feed line from the remote res, and a small 3/8" return line from the box. I intend to eliminate the 3/8" stock line and run that direct to the reservoir.

yep i was think something different then you on what you needed the 3.5" tube for.

I understand now.
Is that pump like the ones on the fullsize chevy conversion vans? i think i saw one last week.

that's the one....mine is from a 1991 Chev van setup.

Got comfirmation on PBB on my ideas, just gotta find/order the tubing now.

I use a automatic transmission cooler and run it in the return line adds fluid and helps cool the fluid much better.
