Great trucks... I have a '97 x-cab 4wd with 158K.
The manuals had a clutch bracket issue that requires some welding.
The seatbelts never, and I mean
never, retract...
The speedo cables dry out and growl (sounds like a can of rocks rolling behind the dash), especially in colder climates. They must be replaced rather than re-greased.
The firewall can "pop" when the vehicles flexes due to some poor welds. Better welds = no more problems.
The hood flexes & flutters at highway speeds, again poor welds.
Starter contacts need occasional cleaning, same issue as other Toyota starters in Taco's & 4Runners
The T100 was included in the steering relay recall a few years ago. Should have been replaced by now.
Before going to 33" tires, I repeatedly got 18.9mpg in town and 21.9mpg on the highway with a supercharged 3.4ltr.
All auto tranny's = 4.10 gear ratio
All manual tranny's = 3.73 gear ratio
No aftermarket support for armor; bumpers, sliders, & skids. Custom only (unless you include Kennesaw Mtn. Fab, who's not well regarded) ARB makes a rear locker for it, TRD has their 2nd gen supercharger to wake it up some, suspension & body lifts are still available as are ball joint spacers. Snorkels for 3rd gen Tacomas fit almost perfectly.
Toppers are hard to find but the first gen x-cab Tundras share the same bed measurements, so those will work on a T100.
The sport bucket seats are the best seats Toyota has ever offered in any vehicle.
I can't comment on the replies of it being underpowered, but mine has been incredibly reliable. I've done some minor modifications to the drivetrain and suspension and even thrown a camper on the back, which I take all over the west repeatedly. They are a plush ride, comfy as hell and easy to drive. My only complaint is the lack of rear doors & the seatbelts.
If the truck checks out, I would feel extremely comfortable putting my son in one. But my boy can't have mine yet!
My ARB locked & TRD supercharged T100 w/ Four Wheel Camper, way above timberline in Colorado on Sept. 12, 2009 -
