Found a 1991 FJ-80 here in WI that is in decent shape. Mechanicals are excellent and the mileage is at 150,000. Body is rust free and has only some dents in the doors (nothing too Major, probably can be pulled out or pounded out). Interior is cloth, but clean. Front end it looks like he hit something and messed up the bumper hood grill. He wants $4000 for it. My thoughts are that it is a good deal even with the cosmetic items. Any other opinions out there? What kind of mileage would this get and is there anything specific I should check out? Thanks

yep -- it's not a bad deal -- though a wrinkled hood is frightening --

-- check to make sure he didn't damage the radiator, p/s lines, etc --

-- also, check the steering knuckles -- any service done on them?

-- how about the exhaust -- tacked up? take some off for that --

-- what prolly works slow = windows -- what likely doesn't work = cruise control.

-- these are wonderful vehicle/powertrain combos, if you know what their limitations are -- they're not great in hilly areas, but they are definitely strong runners --

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I'd not worry about the small dings, but check out the rear lift gate around the bottom edge of the window. They tend to rust there...not a big deal to fix or replace. I've seen rust free lift gates sell for around $350. It would probably cost $200 to $300 for a body shop to fix it properly.

The driver's seat will most likely be torn right where your left rear pocket would be. This is very common and not too hard to fix if you know how to use a sewing machine. I fixed mine for about $5.00 worth of vinyl and some gray canvas. If you don't know how to sew, a sailmaker might do this for you if they have time.....and I bet they will have time if you live in WI.

Eric points out the exhaust with good reason. The 2 front pipes have the converters welded right on. These are ridiculously expensive from Toyota. Cruiserparts.net sells them for $300 each. I've never seen them so I can't comment. I'm sure there are other options aside from OEM IF the exhaust system is bad.

There is no PHH on this engine to keep you up at night. They are a lot slower than a 93 and up, but I think the engine is pretty bullet proof.

I'm sure you would have to put some money into the things above, but starting out at $4000 seems pretty good. The best first investment would be a factory service manual.

Forgot to mention the mileage....mine gets 12 mpg no matter how I drive it.

I got my '91 for less than that. 160K, no rust, some scratches in the glass, and oxidized paint. Inside a little dirty but in decent shape, oh and a really bad tint job. I paid $3700.

I paid $3800 for mine. Just needed an o2 sensor. Great paint, interior, mechanics, small rust spot under rear window. You are in the ball park.
