Agreed, looking good. What your process? CLR, FluidFilm, wax?
thank you. just following the basic @wngrog method: CLR applied with 00 steel wool, frequent rinsing, then applying Penetrol when dry.
i see you are in seattle. one thing i learned is to watch the weather forecast. i had the bad luck of applying the first coat of penetrol right before the biggest rain storm we've had in san diego in many months. lots of spots the next day. i just put down the next layer and rubbed it in and it looks fine.

Tested the CLR and a scratch free pad on the tail gate. You can see a mild improvement, but I think I’ll need to step up to something more abrasive.

Well this about 5 years over due...

I began wiping off a copious amount of primer that a previous owner sprayed on. Most of the paint underneath was in really good shape, in this area.

Just used some acetone, elbow grease and some marine polish.

It turned out pretty good so far. The lower lip of the hood is down to primer and a few spots of rust.
Still have some more work ahead of me.

Looking for pro tips on the above post...
Since there is only a few small rust spots on the front of the hood, with most of the paint worn off the leading edge leaving only primer...

Should I just spot apply the CLR to the rust areas with a follow up of Penetrol & just polish & wax the good painted areas?

Those are the before pics. Here is a few during and afters. Only have the passenger side done. Will rust prevent the spots and do drivers side in the next few days.

It’s pretty crusty but Kansas is pretty hard on these. I plan to get some smooth aluminum covers for the quarters and fake patina them to match.

Thanks for the inspiration.

Locking in Patina.

So looking over the photos from the past year Seems like my 40 is accelerating its patina process. Think the difference between being kept dry in a garage for the past few years vs under a carport in Seattle now. (Bezel was swapped between photos) There's also a color balance difference in photos.

Ideas on how to help protect it. Guess I can give it a CLR bath to kick back the rust and coat it in linseed oil/wax? Penetrol seems like a bit more of a permanent coating.
