first. has anybody used the toyota rebuild kit, and if so, to what success? did it work? did it last?
second. if that turns out not to be a viable option, has anyone had one rebuilt, and if so where? and again, what success did you have?
needing to replace the one in the mistress, and bought a used one from mud, only to find out it did not work, and in fact, is actually worse than the one it was supposed to replace.
so, my options now are buy a new one from toyota, get the rebuild kit, or have it rebuilt. i'd like to fully explore the less expensive two options.
the floor is now open for discussion....

I bought the rebuild kit and the pressure hose for the 80 from Toyota of Dallas. Did the rebuild 2 months ago.....no leaks so far. (knock on wood).

The hardest part for me was getting the d..... thing off. Mike

well, it's gonna be pretty easy, then. mine's already off. replaced one in bad shape, only to find out the one i'd bought was also non functioning. so, i'll get the kit, rebuild the first one, swap it back in, and rebuild the new one, keep it as a spare, or sell it, and buy something else i need.
either way, i'm covered, it sounds like.

was it rebuilt toyota? i ask because i got one once from autozone, or o'reilly's once, and after thre non functioning units, i ended up buying the toyota one, and no problems.

I have gone through many many rebuilt power steering pumps. Had mine rebuilt, bought rebuilt, but they never ever lasted long enough. I finally bought a new pump from Toyota, $380 with the LSLC dicount, and my only regret is that I didn't go that router sooner. Because it has saved me a lot of time and money in the long run.

I think that the two achilles heels of the FJ60 are the power steering pump and the exhaust manifold.

I have also added a power steering fluid cooler in front of my radiator. Mike Dadja did it. Used a transmission cooler.

I think that toyota sells rebuilt starters and alternators, because they are successfully rebuilt all the time. They do not offer rebuilt (or "remanufactured") power steering pumps, because they believe that they can not be rebuilt with enough certainty that they will last last long enough to satisfy their customers.

It was a rebuilt Toyota pump. You should check with Jacque and see how much a new one is with the discount.

Jason, where did you buy that rebuilt Toyota Pump? Napa? Autozone? Because I just confirmed with Toyota of Dallas and there is no Toyota rebuilt Toyota pump offered. The good news is that a brand spanking new one, with a TLCA/LSLC discount is only $332. why bother with rebuilt at that price? I know times are hard, but you will spend far less money in the long run with the new one. The rebuilt ones have never lasted long enough for me. And there has got to be a good reason that Toyota doesn't want to offer rebuilt ones, like they do with other parts.

already got a price on a new one, but the wife is being particular, so as of now, no go. price was even better than anything i've seen posted here, but she's being nitpicky.
so, i'll do the rebuild, i'll be particularly careful, take as many precautions as i can, and see how long it lasts.
then, i'll get a new one somewhere down the line if this one fails, and go from there.
