I'm developing a leak @ the resovoir on the power steering pump. Can I just replace that seal or do I gotta get a new pump. Any tips, tricks or part #'s appreciated. Thanks.

If the leak is coming from the cap area, try flipping the gasket inside the cap over. If the leak appears to be coming from the junction between the lower body of the reservoir and the lid that the cap screws on to sometimes you can get away with tightening the crimps that hold the body and lid together. Look closely at the seam between the two and you will see crimp marks. Good luck.

You can pull the resivor and buy the tank to pump seal and the seal on the bolt that goes into the pump body. It might fix it. I "think" toyota has these but you should be able to match them up at a hardwear store.

get after that leak ASAP -- P/S fluid dripping down onto the air pump below can cause it seize...

Yeah, it's *no* joke about the power steering pump fluid causing the air pump to sieze. I thought it was a bunch of "hooey" ... until ...

About a two weeks ago I accidentally put in to much power steering fluid. It leaked for a couple of miles. I cleaned it up very carefully after discovering the leak. I mean I cleaned *very* carefully.

Guess what siezed the following week ??? I'll only give you one guess ???

The rebuild air pump is working great.

P.S. There was a sticker on the old air pump too. "DO NOT OIL". Well duh !

Can I take the pulley off while the pump is still installed on the truck? How do I go about holding the pulley from turning in order to get the nut off? In order to remove the resovoir, I gotta get the pulley off. The pulley gets in the way of the bolt that holds the resovior on.

Air pump assembly is a critical piece. It holds tension to the belt which drives the water pump. I went with a factory rebuilt pump, $245, $200 core charge. Toyota wanted ~ $900 for an air pump. I showed them three fingers, upright, and told them to read between the lines.
:+)

Losing the air pump too, is a show stopper. It will disable your truck. Luckily, my truck broke down at my mechanics. It's wll trained. He was able to pull the air pump, gut it, get it to spin, re-install it, so I could drive around for the weekend while the replacement rebuilt pump was UPS Red Labeled into the shop.

Specter has an air pump bypass kit. Don't know $$$, but since I'm stock down to almost the nuts and bolts I went with the rebuild pump. Hind sight, I'd probably take a harder look a the bypass kit.

T'aint simple job either. A lot of sh*t has to come out to replace that freak'in air pump.

Fix it ... before it fixes you ... or at least get the parts and have'em handy.

You can pull the pully off of the PS pump, no problem. There may be a little rust, but mine came off easily enough. Just watch out though, there's a removable half-circle little "chuck" that mates the pully to the spindle and keeps it all spinning.

Oh, and all you have to do is run that nut off of it (easy to do if the belt is still tight for tension) and a little WD40 on the spindle. I'm thinking when I pulled mine off, I used a rubber mallet to tap it off. Came off easily though.

Very cool. Thanks for the info. I must not have had enough tension on the belt which caused the pulley to turn.

All I gotta do now is wait for the damn seal to come in.

If it still slips, and it might, you can also use a small pry bar in behind the pully to sort of jam it up. If you can use any sort of impact type wrench (with universal joints) and that'll help pop it out.

If none of that works, it's really not a whole lot of work just to pull the whole pump out. I pulled mine out not long ago and was able to replace it in a couple of hours one night. It's really a 1  job.
