I have a 1986 FJ60 with the factory original wheels. Looking to maybe have them stripped of chrome (sandblasted?) and then powdercoated black. Anyone ever done this? Is it difficult/expensive?
Any help/advice is appreciated.

I had my chrome wheels powder coated a couple of years ago. I spoke to 3 powder coaters, all said just rough up the chrome and all is good to go with them.

I had a sandblaster just hit them to add some tooth to the finish and everything came out great.

Reverse electroplate. That is what I did, and it was cheap and easy.

Here is a good thread about a few approaches.

The problem with chrome is that for many of us there can be aluminum cancer under the chrome, so just roughing it up would not have helped in the long run as chunks would still peel-off. Three years onward and my powdercoat is in perfect condition.
