The right sized lunette matched with the right size pintle makes a big difference with banging and clunking.

Ditto this. I paid very close attention when buying my tow vehicle side pintle to make sure it matched the lunette. I get very little noise.

Hi Brian--I've seen your railroad exploration site--pretty interesting....

I have the same hitch as you show in your photo---just got my trailer--3/4 ton M101A..?

HAS ANYONE TRIED SOME SORT OF 'BOOT' SUCH AS OLD TIRE TREAD OR ? TO REDUCE THE SLOP/NOISE?--OR OTHER OPTIONS--I WANT TO KEEP THE SURGE BRAKES SO DON'T WANT TO CONVERT TO HOME-MADE OR THE OTHER 2 AFTERMARKET OPTIONS THAT SOUND GOOD BUT CAUSE ME TO LOSE THE TRAILER SURGE BRAKE WHICH I THINK IS A MUST FOR HEAVY LOADS DOWN-HILL--

ANY IDEAS?

LOL, that's not my site. Happens to be another Brian who lives in my town. And yeah, it's a pretty cool site. I visit it at least once a week.

As a matter of fact, I found some old heavy walled 2" ID radiator hose and cut it to fit over the ball. Worked great. After about three years service it wore out. I haven't been able to find a suitable replacement yet, since most stock straight radiator hose is less than 2". And the molded 2" hose is costly-'spensive. But the idea is sound. BTW, I only put it on for highway and town use. I wanted more play off road, so it would get pulled out when we left pavement.

To be more clear on the hose... it's not the flared end, but the whole length of hose should be 2" ID. Otherwise it's just a waste using the last couple of inches.

Thanks Brian--appreciate the input--will see if I actually take the trailer for off-road adventures--likely will be solo most trips out so won't need to take the trailer (family isn't into getting stuck, driving along the edge of drop-offs and all the other rough ride details-...), but am planning ahead for when I do so it goes well.
thanks,
