Stupid question, but it's been ages since I did anything like this, but would be some of the better degreasers options to use in a parts washer? The instructions simply say to use water/household detergents (ph6-8). And apparently not to use methylethyl keton (MEK), Perchloroethylene, or trichloroethylne, as these will damage the pump.

I had Varsol in my head, but that's more of a paint thinner.

This stuff perhaps? :

Tractor Supply sells the good stuff in 5 gallon cans.

Trichloroethylene or TCE is a hazardous chemical that was used as an industrial cleaner and in dry cleaning back in the day. Definately wouldn't want my hands in that. I have loaded out many trailer loads of dirty dirt containing TCE.

Chlorinated solvents are not friendly to your central nervous system or your parts washer, but they dissolve grease and oils really well. If you do use them, be somewhere well ventilated and wear gloves and an organic vapor respirator. MEK is a lot less dangerous and pretty good at dissolving gums and resins. It will probably ruin a cheap pump but a lot more slowly than the chlorinated stuff. The best thing you can do with the water based cleaners is to get them warm, or even better, hot.

I used bicycle degreaser, Finish Line Ecotech. Little expensive but worked well and was biodegradable.

I spend a good portion of my Sunday afternoon driving around town trying to hunt down some biodegradable solvent, with no luck, at least in 20 litre pails. The usual suspects just had good old regular solvent, cheapest being about $30 for 20 litres. I thought there would be more options available these days at the storefronts, but not around here apparently.

I buy 5 gallon buckets of water based cleaner at either Costco or a commercial restaurant supply. They work so-so. The best water based stuff I've used is Marine Clean but it's stupidly expensive and has to be shipped.

I use Oil Eater degreaser in my parts washer. I got a 55 gal drum from Sam's Club delivered for Under $300. Stuff works great and it's water based. I don't see the 55 gal drum but they have a 30 gal drum.
