I just returned from PVD event this weekend. We did Isham canyon and Defense Mine runs and had a great time. I also hiked up Surprise Canyon and got a look see at the current condition of the trail.

i have a question about surprise canyon...can you park and camp at or very near the gate and make day hikes up the canyon to panamint city? how about parking at the gate for multiple days and camping up at panamint city?

it sure is beautiful up there...ive hiked to panamint city from the other side once and that was a major chore.

I don't know exactly what is or is not allowed but we parked just a few feet from the gate. There were three other trucks parked parked near us. We know of at least two of the people from these trucks were hiking to the top and planned to spend the night before returning. I don't know if I would camp at the gate but with a shot walk up the trail you could camp in lots of different places on the way up. Camping at the top is best as you can stay in the cabins. I am told it takes about 6 hours of steady hiking to make it to the top.
