Painting Vinyl Wallboard

I have a few rooms to paint that have vinyl wallboard with a floral pattern and slight texture to them on the walls. Oil or water based primer? Any special prepwork? They will be topcoated with a satin or eggshell finish.

I've just painted right over it, no prep, no prime, water based. in a bathroom, so high humidity, but three years, no problems

if you are less of a hack than I, wash it down with Safeprep or TSP, prime with water based
