Embarking on a car project and the material comes in two choices, stainless steel or aluminum, what's the better of the two to paint? What's going to hold up longer?

Given the 2 I'd pick stainless. You cab weld it fairly easily and it won't oxidize if you don't get paint on the back side.

I think it would be less prep work to paint also.

Do not paint stainless. Many companies have several options for painting Al. Stainless is stainless for a reason. For instance- Aqualu has Al. tubs- not stainless.

Well what I want to black out is an exhaust system; muffler and some piping up to the cat. Planning on using hi-temp paint. They offer the system in stainless steel or Aluminized Steel which is i guess different from just straight alumunin.

If the company offers a paint system for a stainless exhaust- go for it. IHHO a nice stainless exhaust looks pretty nice on a restored cruiser.
