when your driving on road or offroad is that over drive button on the shifter supposed to be pushed in or out?

That depends on whether or not you want your vehicle to be in overdrive or not.

Ohh in that case, overdrive is just your 4th gear. If the button is out then overdrive is off which means your vehicle is only allowed to drive in the first 3 gears. With the overdrive button in then the vehicle will be allowed to travel in 1-4th gears. It's similar to the gear selector in that you can limit the highest gear you will travel in. If you select 2nd you will only travel in 1-2nd gears.

Now one reason you would limit the highest gear is for engine braking. Taking the truck out of overdrive will shift the truck in a lower gear which will raise rpms which in turn increases the engine braking effect. This would be good in a downhill descent so that you don't fry your brakes on the way down and loose control.

Does that answer your question?

Um, if you're IN overdrive while driving 'off road', then something is wrong. Or you're trying to set a land speed record or something.

I don't think I've ever been out of second gear on even the best 'off road' road I've ever been on.

A better tip would be to push in the ECT button, and maybe even keep the shifter in L.

Here we go again, a new thread about what the ECT button is.

You guys go that fast off-road? Damn- either your trails are boring, or mine are too small/short.

Dave- I at least know what the ECT button is for, but for you to diss anyone on the 80 forum with you sig is dangerous. Especially concerning any cup holders shorting out anything on an 80.

Dat was retarded.......... :flipoff2:

But it almost made me spit out my coffee....... :D

Did I miss something? ECT changes your shift patterns and holds gears longer, right? That's what I read in my manual.... so what's the deal- ?

Classic line David. Should go in the archives somewhere.

I think the problem is that talking about the ECT button on this forum is like beating a dead horse... a lot.

Funny enough, I have no idea what it is for neither do I make my living nor do I pay my mortage from Land Cruisers.

Sorry if you did not see what was in Joe's post.
