Hey all. Thanks to our current economic situation, I am moving the fam into my FIL's 1795 farmhouse early next year. To make the most of it we have discussed building an outdoor cooking area. Not the kind that is in right now with gas fireplace and grills, but an authentic hearth cooking style to fit the home. I have always wanted to build a unit that has a large, possibly arched fireplace to allow for swing in kettle cooking and I also want to incorporate an oven and brai style open grill.

Does anyone know of any solid resources, either online or in print that I could reference? I have a tremendous amount of experience with landscape style stone work, but most was man made materials and dry stack. I have done some mortar work and am confident I can handle this. I envision an L shaped set up, with the fireplace on one side, the oven in the corner and the grill/ prep area along the other side. I think we will build a shelter over it all using rough hewn timber from the property to stay true to the age of the house.

Any advice is appreciated. I feel that this project could be a stepping stone into a new career in stone work, but we'll see.
