I'm going out by my lonesome a fair amount, so to compensate a little bit I'm overprepared with lots of survival stuff (mmmm..... ice cream....! :D ) and tools.

Next thing I'm gonna get is a large bright orange tarp. So if I'm ever stuck out there and waiting for SAR, and no radio or SPOT, I'm putting out the tarp. Should be easily seen from a helo. And of course all the usual tarp uses.

Now to find one. I think HF may have some...

And yes, camo is more esthetically pleasing, but not quite as effective for SAR purposes, I would surmise... :)

That is all...

back to your regular programming...

:)

There you go.
Search

Well, I may be somewhat of an anal type when it comes to safety, but a whole case...? It'd look like Cristo (the other one) has done a job on the desert... Any self-respecting SAR with a sense of art would avoid the area... :D

I'll stick with the $5 HF special or similar considering I'll never use the thing hopefully... would be cute though... :)

As far as I recall, the international distress signal cloth was like an orange tarp, rectangular with a black square and black circle on it (to differenciate it from any of the 6 quadrillion orange tarps out in the world that aren't currently being used to signal a distress situation...), so maybe carry a small can of black paint along with the tarp?

Camo on one side and orange on the other would be the ticket.

In Australia we have an orange"V sheet" (orange tarp with big black V in middle) which is used for marine SAR,it may be an international distress signal if so go to marine shop.

interesting
had a quick google at distress signals. Doesn't seem like there is anything like a universal one using an orange tarp or anything much else for that matter. Seems like all over the place and region-driven. Although I saw a mention of triangle signals as one semi standard. I did see an orange flag/tarp with ball and circle for marine rescues, but that was one of many others. Best is probably to call your local SAR guys and ask.

And don't forget to tell someone where you are going, when you'll return, what route you may take, leave spare car keys with spouse and put a note in your car describing same. Maybe leave a used sock or two in a zip bag at home for the dogs to use in locating you.

socks?

geez....

and I thought I was overprepared...

it's not as if I'm planning to get stuck out there for sure, guys... :)

plus, if I'm stuck out there, I'm staying with the truck. Pull the hammock out, get some good books, make myself a Pina Colada, and wait... :D
