I love my non-barking dogs.

Howling on the other hand, can get a little funny sometimes.

I have 3 very large german sheaperds who like to bark. They do not bark at nothing, they bark when they play. They like to herd things around and bark at them, especially when they are getting attention. At night, not a peep unless someone comes in the driveway. I almost tried the collar, but a few weeks of training worked pretty good.

Here is the straight up, if you have a dumb dog, get the shock collar. It works fine and does keep dogs from barking excessively. After one or two shocks, turn it off but leave the color on. Things to remember, clean the contacts with alcohol often to avoid giving your dog dermititis.

If you have a smart dog, be careful with the collar. It sounds wierd, but you can cause a little phycological damage if a dog barks for multiple reasons, but cannot associate the shock properly with its actions. Smart dogs are more emotional, dumb dogs just take it. With an intelligent animal, there are other ways to get them to stop barking, like saying "no". If your dog cannot associate commands, try some basic training (usually intended for show dog bull****) for a month or three. 30 minutes a day for 8 weeks will do wonders for a dogs behavior. Many community centers and city activities, even in the boondocks, offer these services.

Or you can be a complete a****** and just remove that larnyx. That's humane.

You guys just need to buy a Basenji

They don't bark but they do yodel. ;)

Why do they bark at the mail carrier, passing people & cars? They're protecting you from these strangers. They bark and the mail carrier leaves, they bark and the pedestrian walks by just as the car does. They're proud of their success and repeat the behavior.

I have a barker too, she's a bit neurotic which is putting it nicely. She's a fearful aggressive dog and we have a bark collar that shocks. It's not real painful and it works if used consistently. After a while you can remove the battery and your dog will think it still works and won't bark. but it will bark at something legitimate and figure out you've fooled her and start all over.

I've given up on mine since :princess: won't leave the collar on.

The shock collar worked just fine for my labs. One only needed it on the first (lowest) setting, and another needed it at 3 (of 4 I think). They learn surprisingly quick, and there were only a couple minor yelps during the learning process. It doesn't hurt - it's just uncomfortable and surprising and not something you want to happen again - that's the point.

In my neighborhood, nuisance barking is a $500 fine after one warning. If the cop can drive up un front of your house after 10pm, roll down the window of his patrol car, and hear your dog barking, that qualifies. It's completely complaint-driven, and since we're friends with most of our neighbors, we haven't had any issues since our original warning 5 years ago.

my parents neighbors had a yellow lab that spent his first ten years or so as a compulsive barker, after moving into town, they got a shock collar for him. After about ten minutes, he got it
