I need to get my dog to stop barking, at least when my wife is home. She's pregnant and he barks whenever he sees anyone in the driveway, a car drives by (thankfully we live in a quiet neighborhood) or hears a door shut. He keeps waking her up when she's napping, and she's rightfully worried about him waking up the baby when that finally comes along. He's a 65 pound english bulldog/pitbull cross that is very friendly, but isn't terribly bright, and yelling no to him when he barks for the last 8 years hasn't helped much. Not to mention that will wake them up too. She wants to put one of those shock collars on him, which I am not really thrilled about. It just seems mean. Has anyone used a product that really worked?

After 8 years, I don't think you are going to modify his behaviour. A shock collar/yelling/spanking have been of no use with my girlfriends pomeranian... we've just come to deal with it... if you find something that works, let me know.

Kimber .45 cal ? Just kidding. I've got a similar problem with my neighbors dog. I've asked them to do something, but it still barks early in the morning and late at night. They really don't care. Got to do something to get some sleep!

Got to do something to get some sleep/QUOTE]

Might try a BB gun.....I went through the same thing-see if where you live has any neusance laws.....our city says if you can video tape & prove the occurance you can press charges to the owner of the dog.

My neighbor has used it and it works quite well.....when he remembers to turn it on....

Not to flame you, but I think a lot of barking is caused by a lack of attention. My neighbor's dogs are pretty much neglected, they have shade but two are in a 10X10 pen and they get to go run out at his farm 1 time a week for a couple of hours....Poor things are starved for attention and exercise (Blue Healer and Lab)

I'd figured out what is making them bark. It is like a baby that needs to be held or is hungry. If you do spend time with him a lot, disregard. If you don't consider finding him a home where he'll get to be a part of the family. Socialization has a lot to do with it as well.

Don't take offense if it does not apply to you. I gave up my last dog because I could not give him the attention and care he deserved...and I'm not talking about bowls of food or water. Research the breed and find out what they need to be happy, and do it or find someone who will.

Don't get me wrong, I like the neighbors, just not their dog. They don't give it any attention. The dog barks at nothing and will not stop. I guess it might "run away " sometime soon.

I'm not going to shoot my dog, that's completely out of the question. Although my wife at times lately might disagree. The funny thing is he only seems to bark when we are home. The first person who gets home usually finds him snoozing on the couch. But when the next person gets home he runs around barking until he figures out who it is. We have a big double front door with a frosted glass panel in each, so he can see movement outside. Whenever he notices anything out there, he barks. He get's lots of attention from both of us, as well as my brother in law who also lives with us. So I know that's not it. Maybe i'll try hanging something over the front doors and see if it helps.

i have basically the same neighbor as cruisin carolina. samoyed that they never pay attention to. he used to bark for hours on end middle of the night, so i bought a "bark free" and mounted to the side of the house right next to where his pen is. put it on audible just to let the neighbors know what it was. within six months or so, he was rarely barking. now, every once in a while i have to plug it in, but not very often.

tri-tronics xs bark collar works great. i use them with my dogs and they work well. you just have to make sure you get the right setting for the dog so you don't hurt it. www.gundogsupply.com sells them for $99

dogtra also makes a good bark collar that is rechargeable and i think it is cheaper. that same website has them so check them out. i have heard good things about it.

or just shoot it!!

I wonder if the citronella smell might bother my wife. She's super sensitive to smells right now being pregnant. She actually wanted me to put our new couch in the basement because it smells, well, new. I think Ige was referring to one of the other things I was looking at. I saw some things that you just put in the house that emit a noise when they bark. Supposedly only the dog can hear it. But then I wonder if it would go off if a dog was barking on TV?

I tried one of those citronella collars on our dog it worked for around a week then she got to liking thwe smell and would bark to get a wiff. stupid dog! We then got a shock collar tied into the invisible fence as she was a wonderer it worked for both barking and wandering. that was 8 years ago and she only barks at doorbells and sirens now.

Some dogs are tough to break. I have two boxers and they love to bark. They get lots of attention and we run them about 3 miles a day. They also are outside in our fenced yard during the day, so they get lots of excersize and it doesn't seem to do much.
I use a squirt gun in the house and they don't like water so that works pretty good and has mostly cured the indoor barking. Outside is another problem though. We bought two of the shock collars and I found that inhumane. One dog didn't seem to care and the other yipped and kept getting shocked untill she deficated and was lying on her side. This happened before I could catch her and get my hand inside to take the shock. Never again. I do like the shock underground fence collars though. The problem is that the bark ones dont stop when the dog yelps. So I also bought two of the citronella spray collars. They work great for the first couple weeks. The only problem is that with two puppies they bark at eachother and have figured out that they can run up to the other and bark and spray the other one. It's funny to watch, but doesn't help with the barking problem. If you have one dog in the house, I think it would work pretty well.

BTW you can also get just a water spray for the citronela collars. It might work just as well if the dog doesn't like getting sprayed in the face.

If citronella doesn't work, I suggest using a product called Bitter Apple. It's great for barking and dogs that love to chew. I was introduced to this stuff when I was taking my 2 labs through obedience class and the stuff works!
