I need a vehicle with better gas mileage for my new job. I will be replacing a 1-ton cargo van (13-14MPG). I won't be hauling anything in particular, but may need to deliver building materials from time to time.

I have a friend who has an '04 Tacoma Pre-runner with a V-6 and AT. He bought it new and has 50K miles on it. He's asking $11,500. Truck is in great shape, looks brand new on the inside with a few minor dings on the outside. ($225 to pull out dents)

Is there anything to look out for with these trucks? I think this model year falls under the rusty frame recall, correct? Are there any known issues? I read something about a ball joint recall.

All information and opinions welcome.

Its falls under the frame recall. My frame was worst near the front body mounts, had a few holes in it. But then again, beach everyday and not washing it will do that. Ball joint recall, and something with the fuel tank, a metal plate that would cut the fuel line in a bad rear end accident. Other than that, my 02 d-cab has been beat on hard and still runs great. Seems like a good price, although I havent checked them a year or so, especially with only 50k.

Thanks for the response. I'll check out the frame really well. This truck has been well maintained.

I have searched, but just wondering what these trucks get as far as MPG. Can I expect an average of 20 MPG?

I have an 03 Double Cab 4wd -- my second Tacoma. No issues to date, but don't expect a great increase in mpg. With Michelins and a 19 mile commute to work, I rarely got 20 mpg. With Nitto all-terrain tires and a shorter commute w/ more traffic, I get about 17 mpg. Prerunner might be a little better. I'd say with the knowledge you have of the truck and the relatively low mileage, the price is a decent deal and the truck will hold value pretty well.

NCgx470- I forgot to mention this truck is a 2wd. I don't need 4wd on a commuter. So the MPG should be a little better. IDK

I am still trying to sell my van. I have two interested parties just on word of mouth.
