If you’ve been following along at all, then you know that this past year has been one of massive change:

Unprecedented numbers of mortgage defaults and with them, unprecedented pressure on lending institutions; runaway gas prices; sweeping changes in the way in which Americans buy cars; enormous softness in the housing market and a related nose-dive in home prices; huge increase in the costs of seemingly the most mundane of commodities – all have been part of the changing landscape.

As all this has happened, investors in the nation’s financial markets apparently have become less confident in the viability of a number of companies in a number of industries.

So it is very interesting indeed to note that in a survey released recently by the financial publicationhttp://toyota.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/10/10/barronslogo.png "Barron’s," the same four companies listed as "most respected" by the same survey last year, before this year’s turmoil got under way, are also listed as the four "most respected" this year.

We mention this because one of them is Toyota – and interestingly, in these troubled times, it’s the only auto manufacturer in that top four. Indeed, it’s the only auto company not just in the top 10, but in the top 50, and one of just two auto manufacturers in the 100 companies the survey listed. You can see the entire list by clicking here.

You only have to look at the wild swings the stock market can take to realize the importance of investor confidence and respect. They’re what keep the markets afloat, what keep everyone’s 401(k)s and pension funds performing on the bright side. Indeed, they’re part of the reason that Toyota stock can be found in so many of those 401(k)s and pension funds.

We’re grateful for this vote of confidence in Toyota, and we hope that our products, engineering, technology and management policies will continue to make us worthy of that confidence.
