That’s pretty normal for a H55, though I wouldn’t exactly call it sticking. I hardly ever use first gear. Would be interesting to try out a new H55 and see if it does the same

I've actually got an H150F in my troopy. Is that typical as well?

Yes. Normal for a 1FZ-F. My '94 FZJ75 Pickup has the same transmission.
I wouldn't know, never driven a H150F. I did drive a H150 something in a HDJ80 from Europe and it did seem to shift more "normal" than the H55F

H15# also tend to be a bit 'baulky' on the 1-2 shift when cold. Castrol VMX-M definitely helps

So I definitely need new birfs, the axle assembly seems fine. Any recommendations on new birfs? OEM are about $450 each

Birfs, knuckles, rotors, seals, bearings... Welcome to the club.
OEM birfs are good enough and well worth the price. So are rotors and knuckles. Ask me how I know.
You may want to replace all the studs.
You are in the neighborhood already. Take the chance and get manual hubs. The 1FZ-F engine is powerful but thirsty, and manual hubs will help a little with fuel consumption.
Last but not least, H150F's first gear is rather short, although not as much as in the H55F. H151F's first gear is a tad longer. It takes time to get used to it, and its feedback click is louder when cold. Remember, gears in the H15x transmissions have a feedback click that may be annoying at first.

Thanks for the feedback. I've got OEM rotors to install already and have all new wheel studs as well. I will start putting together the list of parts required for manual hubs and new knuckles and birfs. @John Young put together a great image of all the necessary items for putting on manual hubs. I believe part number: 4353060130 is the correct free wheel hub assembly that will replace my 4350269026 hub assembly. Do you know if this is correct?
Going to be a long project and I'm looking forward to it!

I checked the part number.
Apparently, GCC spec trucks in the mid 1990s did not have manual hubs. That would explain, at least in part, the state of your front axle.
43530-60130 matches models built after 1999.
43530-60042 matches models built between 1990 and 1998.
Both parts are the manual hub only. The flange is slightly different between the two of them.
I would try to get 43530-60042.
43502-69026 is the sub-assembly that goes between the manual hub and the knuckle/rotor. I have to check this one.

Pretty sure I never saw locking hubs on any Land Cruisers of any kind in my 4 years in Saudi.

going to guess it's original to the vehicle. My passenger side looks pretty great still, but that knuckle wasn't fubar'd.
I would need new birfs regardless for making a switch to manual hubs correct? They require two grooves for the snap right from what I've read.
That's incorrect. You need the correct birfields with one snap groove. OEM never came with 2 snap grooves.

My Troopy's gearbox wasn't very nice when we got it..... switched out whatever fluid was in it to Penzoil Synchromesh trans fluid and it was like night and day. It's one of the smoothest shifting transmissions in any of my trucks. Same 1FZ-F with the H150 in my truck as in yours.
