Tech inspection video from Olathe Toyota. We brought the RAV in for an oil change.

Pay attention at 1:14 where the tech says the the tires have 5/32 left for tread ware and then says the alignment fails and he recommends an alignment and this is what is causing the tire ware.

Makes perfect sense except that the tires are brand new and were installed less than 24 hours before this inspection. Less than 10 miles on the tires when this video was taken. Pretty sure the alignment is fine too though I am having it double verified at a place I trust. Suspect the cabin air filter he shows was a prop kept on his bench.

It gets even better. In the video the tech (if he really is a tech) says the brakes are good. They should be as Olathe Toyota replaced them on October (just the front). When my wife tells the "Service Advisor" that the tire thing doesn't make sense, he calls the tech (or pretends to) and then says oh sorry that was a mistake but you need to watch your breaks. Apparently that guy didn't watch the video or look at the paper report he handed to my wife saying 10/10 for the front and 8/10 on the rear. Additionally funny was that the brake inspection they did in October said 6/10 on the rear, so apparently I have self healing rear brakes. I told them do nothing on the rear then because I knew they were OK and only brought it in because I knew the front needed done.

They have have always tried to upsell my wife on stuff isn't necessary but usually its at least semi plausible. She always comes home saying "do they think I'm stupid?" Its true that they don't tell me crazy stuff and barrage me with upsell of unnecessary things like they do her. I actually do think its because she is female.

I think, out of a duty to humanity, I need to bring this to Toyota national or maybe just regional. This behavior is way over the line. The sad thing here is that they have some really good techs and the Parts guys are great. They have only one guy they let work on LCs (if its anything other than oil change). He installed my BP-51 suspension and there were zero issues or drama. Most dealers won't put aftermarket stuff on, especially a suspension lift. I believe the Service manager is new. Maybe that's the issue.

Edit: I missed part of the story on the alignment. In the video the tech says its bad. When my wife started asking questions about the tires and the need for an alignment after she saw the video, when they said the tires were OK, and it was a mistake, they also produced the alignment report saying the alignment "was perfect". They did not give this to paper report to her. So basically, "its all good mam, sorry for the mistake" after she started asking questions.

This is the digital version of a pencil whipped inspection. Happens all the time. That hunter piece of equipment measures tread, pressure and alignment as you drive over it. It’s possible the tech pulled the wrong report.

You can call and complain. They won’t do anything. So much demand mixed with high turnover leads to poor service. Lots of possibilities for your experience…most of the time it’s people.

Sure the guy could have pulled the wrong report on the PC he was looking at but hard to understand how he videos himself looking at the breaks that he doesn’t actually see the brand new tires.

But certainly possible that he just just goes into mindless mode because he does 100 of these videos a day and they pay him $12/hr.

Agree that complaining won’t accomplish anything and might actually piss me off more.

Olathe toyota wouldn't sell me multiple inner axle seals in the 90s thus the reason I opened the tac account at molle toyota. Olathe parts laughed at me when I asked for 5 inner axle seals told me I only needed 2 and wouldn't sell me what I had asked for. That was many years ago and I never saw any need to go back. And yes I'm still bitter. That was tens of thousands of dollars spent on toyotas ago. I absolutely hate any shop that does this crap.

So, the story continues. Took the RAV in to the tire place to get alignment checked. 3 of 4 tires were toed out pretty bad. So, Olathe Toyota was right about the alignment except that after they told my wife it was bad, and she started asking questions, they told her "the alignment was perfect" and waived a paper report in front of her but didn't give it to her.

I'm now more inclined to think this 80% dumb a$$/ incompetence and 20% CYA, "make the lady asking questions go away". At this point, I will just listen to Elsa:

Olathe has changed i have a whole sell account with them by 20 oil filters at a time and 20 drain plug seals and 20 star lock washers. they use to to not stock there and relied on the KC warehouse. But now have inventory on hand and can deliver to me same day in some cases.

doesn't fix young techs probably following some new process and automated system just clicking buttons we pre set comments. that's why I'm booked out 3 months typically

I have Olathe Toyota Parts logged in my phone as "Sum Dumbass" (not kidding) due to some of the past parts people that had no idea what I was asking for and after three times they still couldn't get it right. That was a number of years ago. In the last 2-3 years, their parts department has really come around and they are getting better and they actually stock a number of parts for the 80. They are also a few dollars cheaper than Molle Toyota on the same parts. I truly mean $3 to $5 per part on big things like alternators and radiators and starters.

In the last two months I have needed a new starter, a new alternator, and a new radiator for my 80. The alternator and radiator I called about as I was driving from Omaha to KC. The parts guy checked inventory and sent me a text to verify he had the parts so I told him to pull them and have them ready. I walked in, picked them up and was out in less than 15 minutes.

I cannot speak for their service department, as I try to avoid ANY shop working on my vehicles mostly due to the severe anxiety it causes me because of this stupid shyt you are describing.

However, a friend of mine had a RAV that he took in to O.T. and it needed a water pump. He called me over before he took it in to verify what it was. We looked it over and I advised what they would tell him it needed and I nailed the fact that they were going to hit him with timing belt, and two or three other things and I told him to refuse them. I hit the nail on the head and he told them to only do the water pump and change the serpentine belt. It still cost him $1300 for that. I about choke when I hear about the incompetence (and have seen it) then about the prices they charge to actually do the work. Not that it's unfair, but definitely not for shytty work. This part is any shop, not OT.

Our "good" dealership in my area was 45 mins west in Asheboro. It was a one-owner place. They sold to a chain and now they are "average."

The rest are all pretty rough around Raleigh. I do avoid the Hendrick ones tho - never a good experience, except maybe if you get the right parts guy.

I wish we had one as good as Molle (as I remember it) closer.

Back when I lived in TX, the Hyundai dealership showed me my "cabin air filter" loaded with debris and mouse droppings. Obviously I suspected a 'prop' filter or they dumped some stuff they swept off the floor onto my filter to show me. I declined service/replacement.

Next time in, same deal. Only I took a time/date stamped video of showing the air filter while in the drive up service lane.

Immediately asked to speak with the service manager and owner on the spot to show them the video. Really gives the brand a bad name, all for what, a few bucks in labor? Couldn't understand it.
