I’ve been pondering this one pretty hard and I think the best course of action would be this.

Do not rebuild or replace the engine with another 5.7, you’ll never get your money back unless you do it all yourself. Even then, it’s got a black mark on it that most buyers will not want. Instead, use this as an opportunity to swap in something special. A Cummins, a Toyota Diesel, an LS, a 2JZ….hell, try to jam a 7.3 Godzilla in there!

Now it’s SPECIAL and you have added value. How many 200’s are out there with an engine swap???

You do bring up an intriguing scenario.......

Even better, tear down the old engine and do a YouTube channel on what went wrong, the rebuild, etc. Make $$$ on the that and then fix it and you have another good engine.

This is the best case scenario for sure. I think the only reason we don't see this done as often is because the 200series ventures into an era of cars where it's more complicated than just shove an engine/ECU and call it a day. That kind of mechanical simplicity ended with the 100series (some would say 80)

That being said Gary if you are willing to do a swap, but don't want to go full customize fabrication, I'm guessing the 4.6 2UR (GX460), or the 4.7 2UZ (100series), or even the 4.0 V6 1GR out of the 4Runner, can be sourced much much cheaper than the 5.7 3UR. Since overseas market get those engine as options, the connecting pieces should be available to order relatively easy instead of trying to fabricate yourself. Could be a good middle ground option.

And of course if you can manage to get the 4.5 twin turbo V8 diesel that the Australians got... you maybe just be the first turbo diesel 200series in the US.

You can't even find mechanics willing to install (and warranty) a 3UR motor sourced from a Tundra or Sequoia. Good luck finding someone willing to swap in an engine from an entirely different platform.

OP, don't over-complicate the situation. Just sell it as-is and get yourself another 200 (if you still want one).

This is what is going to happen (more than likely). But it does sound intriguing for you guys with the time and energy. I will throw in the fubared 200 and you guys throw in time, labor etc. and we spit the proceeds and start up "Gray Rider's New Riders". ( I need to trademark that right now).... :)

Why all this talk about an engine swap instead of a rebuild of whats there? Unless the block is cracked or something. Id be willing to do this, but not sure I have the tools.

As discussed, it seems that the best opportunity for adequate return on investment is for whomever purchases the shell unit to actually do the work themselves and not have it done by a mechanic shop (whatever the scope of work might be). Now get some tools!! :)

The financial consequences of a 200 which is unfortunate enough to lose an engine are immense. It's very un-Land Cruiser like and quite unfathomable by Toyota standards. I don't know how anyone owns, or plans to own, an older 200 for the long term without this fact at the very least lingering in the back of their mind. Let alone buy one used without knowing service history.

I don't see how it improves either? 5.7 swaps from a Tundra/Sequoia into a 200 are little more than fairy tale suggestions told on this forum. Zero evidence that professional shops are doing it. Maybe in the future when the 200s in the North East start rusting out there will be a surplus of 5.7s plucked out of them and bring motor prices down?

Put another way, and to the 100 vs 200 point, in 5-10 years (and beyond) which would you rather have? An '05 100 series or a '10 200 series? Both are old, but one is going to be a hell of a lot cheaper to resurrect if it dies than the other.
Funny me running across this thread. I have acquired a 2011 LX 570 and all signs are pointing toward it having a different block (painted black), I presume a remanufactured motor. I saw a few ads for re-manufactored 5.7's for around $7,500. Was not something I was aware of when I bought it, but seems that it is being done.

NEW DEVELOPMENT: I have a JDM donor engine with 80k miles bought on ebay, The 2014 "roller non running LC", and the original fubar engine pulled out in Western NC all for sale for $ 20,000. If no takers we will install the donor engine and see where the chips fall.....

Newest Development: Swapping in the donor engine. Taking it off market for now....

2 months later... any thing? Do you have a dedicated swap thread somewhere that isn't a classified thread?
Kinda slow moving on the swap now. "new" engine is in the vehicle. Will report back as we button things up......
