Greetings...

I am now on my second re-man Toyota Asian carb for my 1973 FJ40; with the same issue. Bought both from CruiserParts.net.

All smog stuff was removed when I bought her; so we're talking a motor, a carb and a transmission mostly. New battery, starter, wiring, alternator, cables, spark plugs and wires, rotor, cap, etc.

Cold start - with full choke, no issues...starts like a new car
Warmed up - stutters when I depress the accelerator until she revs up. Once rolling, and under power situations, no stutter when at speed.

The only remedy, at low speeds, is to have the choke fully pulled out and she runs very nicely; only we're revving too high.

I've tweaked the air/fuel screw from 1 1/2 to as much as 4 full turns (and everything in between) to no avail.

I upgraded to Pertronix electronic ignition with a new 'hot' MSD coil - bypassed the ballast resistor, and upgraded to the new E-3 Spark Plugs.

What am I missing in this tune?

Thanks for the advice.

hi,
i would check for float level, accerator pump nozzle, should jet fuel as soon as throttle start to open, then time the period from start to full throttle in second, normally 0.8 -1.3 sec.with out engine running. and check ingition timing for idling & 2500 rpm for maximun timing advance. if this do not work, next is to check main jet & air jet for correction.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go and check both. I noticed that there is a dot in the center of the float bowl, and I assumed, maybe incorrectly, that if the fuel level is at the dot, then I'd be good to go there.

Any wisdom on the float bowl level?

Chuck;

You're in the wrong part of Ih8mud...

This is the 70 SERIES section, not the 1970s Land Cruiser section. You have an FJ40 Land Cruiser, which is a 40 SERIES. Try here: 40- & 55-Series Tech

If the mixture screw is not doing much, it's likely that you have a plugged up circuit in the carb.

Make sure that you have coil that is designed to work without a ballast resistor.

hehehe, rookie. Welcome to MUD!!!

Hey thanks!

You got any Yoda wisdom to adjust a re-man Asain Carb? Can't seem to get rid of the dead spot when I first touch the accelerator. She starts like a new car, and performs like a beast under a load; but, without the choke out fully, I get a stutter and a dead spot. Go figure?

New electronic ignition and hot coil, without the need for the ballast resistor, new wires, new hoses, just about everything I can think of to replace.

Got any wisdom from the Great White North?

Happy trails,

Chuck
