Odd forum read happenings

Why , sometimes when I log out , and then back in do I arrive to a forum where a multitude of posts I know were marked new before , are suddenly showing as read ??

forum timer cycles on 15 minutes....log in for 5 seconds, come back 20 minutes later, and only NEW posts in that 20 minutes will show as unread.

dammed irritating, and something that was discussed a LOT when the software first changed.

yeah... i liked the old way, where they stayed unread till you read them.

problem i have is i leave a page open in the background, so they are constantly being marked as read... and then sometimes i come back, and it shows all these unread forums, even though i have the last post in that forum... as if i didn't read it when i posted.

other sites that use this software do it too.
