When did diesel engines in L.C.s start getting complicated electronics? There's a guy in my club that says one of the later engines (he thinks the 12H-T) has basically one wire going to it, and that most of the later engines such as the 1HZ 1HD-T, etc. have electronic sensors and pumps. True?

True ,Its an attempt to get a diesel engine to perform and smell like a petrol motor.
It makes the diesel more attractive to people who wouldnt normally drive one such as soccer moms ,young professionals ect.
The downside is when they get moisture or dust in the electronics they stop just like a "gasser".

There was an article on a aussie forum recently that claimed 70% of the vehicles that needed to be towed home from the outback had electronic gremlins. It didnt breakdown the figures for diesel and petrol. The avearage cost of a tow home $7000AUD.

I should have mentioned that the early 1HZ is fairly simple as far elecronics go.I think they are using the 1HD as the base motor for all
models now

Basically anything that ends in a E, such as a 1HD-FTE is electronically controlled and makes for a much much more difficult swap, as opposed to a 1HD-T, 1HZ, 13BT, 12HT, 3B, 2H…

The 1HZ motors I have seen are dead ass simple: power the fuel solenoid, and put voltage to the starter...

There is some engine swap information here:

Greg would know... ;)

My 1HZ only needed one wire to run (minus the starter wire, glow plugs, etc.), and that was the fuel cut off solenoid. EASY.
