Last year I started a new Job and wanted a new duty weapon….well to go back a little further.

When I was a Deputy, while assigned to court duty one week, I read an article about the SA Custom Shop “Professional”. How it was a $6k custom 1911 for the FBI’s HRT team, and how perfect of a pistol they were. Long story short I wanted one and I wanted one bad. Not able to justify, or afford $6k at the time, I settled on a SA TRP operator, a top tier production 1911.

Fast forward seven years, more production numbers of the “professional”, meant prices had come down and availability was up. In the fall of 2021, we had a decent calf check and I decided I had to have one. Found one on gunbroker for $3500 and pulled the trigger!

The day it arrived I also snatched up a RIA 1911 in 9mm, ended up falling in love with the RIA as a ranch beater and felt the Professional to be too nice. I regrettably sold the Professional for a loss and moved on😅

When I started with a new agency in October of 2023, I wanted a new 1911 for duty, in 9mm😳. I nearly bought another Professional in .45c but suck to my desire for a 9mm. I bought a SA Garrison in stainless chambered in 9mm….what an absolute disaster! I have a YouTube video on it if anyone is interested.

This inevitably got me looking at Professionals again with a pit of regret in my stomach. I made some low ball offers on some well used ones, which were subsequently rejected. One day, while at Dave’s Gun shop in Alamogordo, I came across a Colt Competition series, for $950. In a moment of excitement I bought it.

The Colt had a beautiful bluing, which I am a sucker for. However, not by any means a durable finish. One pass in the holster and it already had blemishes. A blue battle worn finish is beautiful and has a worn in character, but this on was not it. Well, I couldn’t leave it alone. I decided to send it off to Nighthawk Custom, getting all the goodies I wanted, while keeping it acceptable for duty. It was completed on Thursday. Bob Reeves sent some pictures, I paid the invoice and I now wait for it as it ships.

That is beautiful! Also cool that you are allowed to carry something besides a Tupperware pistol as a duty weapon. .45ACP is my choice for carry. My usual piece is an old Springfield Armory 1911 compact. It is the perfect carry piece as it has he Commander length barrel with the shorter Officer length grip

I have got back into building guns again. My best friend was killed last year. He was a 07 FFL with the 02 SOT. They played with machine guns and supressors. His son is obsessed with building and has got me back into it. 1911s are next. I am slowly buying the tooling to cut the rails on 80% 1911 frames.

Been disturbing the peace quite a lot around here. There has been someone using the range at least 3 days a week the last month or so.

Noticed the old shotshell boxes. Do you collect them? I have a couple of Peters boxes that are really old, I think one is fairly rare.

A friend of mine finished a 1911 receiver for me. I need to build it. I’ve always wanted to build one, I just need to invest in the tools and start.

Those boxes are not mine, Nighthawk took those pictures. I’d love to collect things like old ammo boxes, but I have too many kids for stuff like that. So I have to stick with collecting guns, pickups, boots and hats🤣

Way cool. I have found that building guns usually will cost more than buying one outright, but is way more fun.

I hear you. My kids are all growing up and leaving. My two oldest are married and gone, my youngest son turns 18 this week. Soon all I will have at home is my youngest daughter, but she just turned 11.

With all this talk about guns, I'm going to bring back up the topic that my great uncle that died a couple years ago was a serious collector and had a large closet full of equipment for reloading. He had dies, tools, lead, powder, brass, and more and more that an uneducated person cannot do justice describing. My stepmother inherited his property when he passed and she would love to sell all the reloading stuff to someone who actually knows what it is and what it's worth. I have tons of pictures of the shelves of the closet. Here are just a couple samples.
