ok guys, Although I may not be new at wheelin, I am still new to cruisers....so here comes a typical newbie question. Now that I have a day off tomorrow, I am going to change the oil in the 40.....sooooo what kind of oil do you guys use? I have the stock 2F. I know it takes 8.5 qt.s but what weight should I use? Once you all stop laughing, I would appreciate some advice. :D

I use and have almost always used in my 40 / 60 / now 45 20/50 weight castrol.

I have never had a problem out of that in the summer, i do not even go lighter in the winter around here even though you probably could. Down to say 10/40 in the winter.

And that is a good question. Even though if you were to ask it in the 40 section, most would tell you about the search section. They just do not know the answer i think when they say that.

how true. I did try the search function but did not come up with anything solid. My manual was so vague that I did not really know which way to go. As always, thanks for the help Darin. It's little things like that that I need to learn.

Thats what us old people are good for sometimes.

Now if i could just find a decent job.

You are right, Darin. 20W/50 is what the book says for temperatures around here. In the winter in Alaska I ran 10W/40 because the heavy stuff turns to goo in the cold.

What do ou think about synthetic oils?

John,

I have never run synthetic oils in any of my cruisers. That being said though, i had an S-10 that i ran Mobil 1 in since 1990 and that was before the big synthetic kick. Mobil 1 was already synthetic at that time. Once you go synthetic you do not want to go back to conventional.

use the search function :flipoff2:

I have been putting sythetic in the wife's FZJ-80 (2 X oil changes) but have been running conventional Castrol in mine. They say that the sythetic can "clean" out an older engine and therefore produce some leaks. I believe this is true becuase the "80" seems to have a small oil leak now.

I am no oil expert by any means, but i would not put it in an old engine for that reason there. Working on trucks for years now i have learned / forgotten a few things. The S-10 that i ran that Mobil 1 in i ran it in it from the start. When i sold it 10 years later i opened 1 of the valve covers and it looked brand new .

I reccomend Castrol to anyone though, i have never had a problem with it.

Crap and I just changed the 62 with 10W/40.... <sigh>

At least it was Castrol, I've pretty much sworn to use it in all my vehicles....

Any good heavy duty oil for summer is fine. I would not put synthitic anything in a older vehicle. Every time i put some in it always comes out due to it being a thinner oil and it cleans out the crud that is holding your oil in with the old gaskets. I think i had a shop one time that used to always recomend puting in the synthetic and when they did i always had problems on my old VW's. Now if you had just rebuilt something like motor or transmission then go for the Synthetic stuff. I have not had my cruser long enough to change the oil but it is getting close to doing it. I do have some Vinatge oil in the CAN! that i will use untill it runs out!

So where can we go after work???

well I found an access road near a power line structure of bunker hill rd. We went down it a little bit but it got real soft and I did not want to risk it without back up. We also heard about a place near winston near the union cross rd off bypass 40. We are going to go check it out this week and see if it is any good.
