Hello all, I think Iam about to get into my 1st project...I am looking at at 81 fj40 6181h, 8k warn winch, fischer plow, one owner. Needs tub, fenders, blah blah blah, strip down body wise. The owner says theres 50k on the drive train, mobile one in the engine. I tracked the guy down because I couldn't stand to watch it sit and rust in his yard. He is getting divorced, and even though he hates to sell his baby, he says he would take two grand for it. Any advice?:steer:

2k is not much to get into a project on a 40...But, be advised that restoring one of these can be very financially straining, (or draining).

With that you have to realize what you are getting yourself in to.

2k is'nt too much but with what little info you give, I make an assumption that it needs a bunch to make it good. If it has the essentials of a useable frame and motor, even in the slim chance of you ending up discontinueing with the project you could probably part it for some good bucks...

But really it is had to give a thorough evaluation with the little info you have given and we need PIC's to be sure.

Welcome and

Welcome to Mud and Yankee Toys.

Spud gives very good advise.

A couple of things to think about.

1) What are you looking to do with it? Daily Driver, Weekend Warrior, Full on Trail Rig?
2) What is your budget? How long do you expect it to take? (take his answer and multiply x3 for actual)
3) What are your mechanical skills like? Would you be doing the work yourself or would you be farming out a lot of the work.

I started a 40 project that was a basket case. I wound up selling off the pieces and purchased a running drving cruiser since I was still many thousands and a couple years away from having it drive able. I am not saying this to discourage you but you need to keep the motivation for a project like this.

As for this particular cruiser take some pictures post them up and we can all give you a better idea what its worth. Make sure you really check out the frame. Especially near the rear bumper/crossmember.

Well it wouldn't be the first (or last) time I have been in over my head, but I am tenacious! I'll know a bunch more tomorrow. I'll give updates.

I want it all! Mostly a daily driver, but I live on a class 4 rd. (non-maintained). I will use it as a toy also!

thanks for the help...wish me luck!

Great, tenacity is a must to complete one of these.

With the comment on where you live/drive...A 40 may be the best thing for you, but you probably already know that or you would not be looking into it.

Good luck!
