newb welding question

I have some wind up legs for a slide on camper. i want to arc weld some brackets on to the legs but they have a shiny zinc coating on them.
Do you grind the zinc coating off or just weld onto it?

yes it needs to be removed, it can interfere with the weld adhesion,

Thanks for the confirming my suspicions about toxic fumes and poor weld adhesion. Its only a small section to grind so that will be the go.

I sent an email to the manufacturer and no reply. They sell brackets for these that have to be welded to the jack but give no basic instructions,safety or otherwise.
