I'm Steve, born and raised in Reno and used to be into wheeling a lot, but got really into the pavement side of business when I got the Trailblazer SS back I '06! Now that I'm done with the most recent major project on it, I want to just drive it, race it, and enjoy it! So I'm looking into getting a FZJ80 and building it into something hardcore...mostly it will be in the rocks!

I've already been posting and lurking and researching and I've come to a solid conclusion of what the rig will be and what I'm going to do to it! I really want to do a '96-'97 Lexus if I can find one with factory lockers...unless I decide to just throw ARB's in a non-locked truck!

I've been doing a lot of research all over, especially Slee's newbie section and would like input from other people who already wheel these pigs as to what parts work and what parts don't...sliders, skid plates, bumpers, everything!

I know a lot of people don't like to run part time kits but with the Longfields, I think it's more of a necessity to get them to last, thoughts?

Should I really try to find the less common LX with lockers or just ARB the non locked units?

With the axles, is a 30/30 or Dirty 30 kit necessary? It will make trail fixes harder unless I carry an extra set around...Or is the stock 28 going to hold up with moly axles?

Slee's 6" kit, good enough to clear 37's without excessive rubbing? Is there anything taller or is taller even needed? Looking at Dusty's build, he seems to be way more than 6" lift and his "droop" seems to not be condusive to the stock 4-link, correct?

I had a LX w/lockers, sold it. I now have a LC w/lockers. Couple of negatives to the LX, body cladding first off, you will want to remove it or the rocks will. Unlike the LC's, which only have the fender flares, the LX's have it running down both doors and along the rear quarter panel. The stock center console on the LX's suck. They put a crappy little subwoofer and cd changer in there that takes up all of the usuable space. LC, much better, you get full use of the center console.

Other than that they are pretty much identical. The carpet is a little "plusher" and the leather on the seats is a little softer in the LX's.

Dirty 30's don't really fit 80's. 80's have a much bigger birfield than mini's, and the inner axle spline count is larger already, so the only choice you have is Bobby Long's Longfields. For the rear everyone recommends Poly's if you are going to put it in the rocks.

Yes Slee's 6 inch clears 37's just fine, some have even squeezed them under a 4" lift. My 35's don't rub at all on 4inches.

Hello and welcome to poverty my friend!
This crap is worse then HEROINE, especially if youre gonna build a crawler out of a wagon. Ive been chasing the DRAGON for years now with my FJ62. :D

Good luck with the build!

Keith

Keith, trust me...I already know this poverty thing you speak of with the SS! Sad thing is, this activity is going to be lighter on the wallet...at least with the inital investment in the rig! :)

I'll be coming to the next BBCNN Tuesday meeting just to introduce myself and start getting to know everyone! You guys all seem to be pretty cool from what I see on here! I want to find a crew like this, so it might work out well! I'm used to the drag racing world where if you are faster than someone, they hate you and talk smack! If you are slower than them, they hate you, mock you, and talk smack! (other than the close friends) So it will be nice to have some people to go out with that have the same goal and are willing to help with what they can!

Jack, I'll talk to you about next weekend when I get back from Dallas! Saturday may work but I have a hitchin' to go to sometime that day...

Welcome Keith :flipoff2:

Nice to see another guy in here. I have yet to actually make a meeting as I am still working in California but I have a house in Fernley. I am hoping to make one of the meetings one day. Just transferred to a new job at another high school so, not sure when I can request a few days off to sneak back up there. I have a 97 LX450, still in the process of building it though. I know the body cladding on it is probably bad for off roading, but I do kind of like it.

I have accepted the cladding into my life.:D Im only on 35's and not a full on rock rig.
It does good in the rocks but its not the focus

Ken's rig is VERY NICE!

He ,unfortunately, is somewhat of a :princess:, but his rig is cool!:flipoff2:

I like it! I'm looking to keep that cladding around...it will be my "Glarmour"! Glam and armour combined!

Well Welcome to mud and Battle Born Cruisers

Just out of curiosity, why would you decide on an 80 series/ wagon to use as a hardcore trail rig?

K

I love Ken's truck. Mine is the same color and everything, I wonder if that makes me a :princess: too. Is not quite as tall...yet. But I am running 35s too.

Jon.

Its not the RIG, but the DRIVER that makes the :princess:!:D

I just gotta throw a little grief Ken's direction from time to time. He's known to be a BALL BUSTER if you dont know that already.

I decided on the 80 for multiple reasons...

1. Four door SUV
2. Non unibody
3. Solid front axle
4. 4-linked coil suspension
5. Spacious interior with room for 5 plus tools and supplies
6. Aftermarket support for upgrades
7. Axle strength/factory lockers
8. Overall ease of modifying and exchanging of parts
9. The type of people I will meet and become friends with by brand and club association
10. As with my Trailblazer SS, I'm not really into the orthodox platforms, if I wanted a Jeep or say a K5 Blazer (which are both abundant) tyre one thing, but I want something that not many other people have! And there is something to be said about the pretensious a****** that goes playing in the rocks with a Luxury SUV, like the LX450...

What is this ball busting you speak of ;)

First video: :clap: That is very impressive. That thing takes off like it was shot off of the line.

No problem, either Saturday or Sunday works, it's just that Saturday is slightly better. Talk to you then.

Jack

Just got home from Fordyce, I want to see the 80 series that can do that trail without some serious body damage.
I'll be looking forward to your build thread.

Well ill be showing you a 60 series that can do that trail without serious body damage in the next year or so its possible but he's gonna have to over build it and thats what i plan on doing with my 60
