hello all,
I am new to the Jackson area and am looking for a good mechanic to work on my 1975 FJ40. I stumbled on this forum and am glad to see there is a landcruiser group. My FJ is in great shape, with only 77k, but it needs some work under the hood. I can get it turn over sometimes but it won't run for long.
anyone got any ideas as for a good mechanic?

hwgates,

Welcome to Jackson. Check out the sticky threads on the top of the forum for our meeting info. We also have a club ride coming up, we would love to have you join us. If you want on the email distribution list with updates and reminders send me an email at euclid42@hotmail.com.

Most of us work on our own trucks, or help each other work on them when we get stuck. Let us know if we can help with yours. Looks like we might be installing 2 lift kits this coming weekend!

Unfortunantly the best mechanic in town, and the one most of us used, doesn't work on them any more. One good option is Graves and Stoddard in Pearl. They are familiar with cruisers and do good work. Might be a little bit expensive. Others will have recommendations.

What type of work do you need done? Depending on the type of work we might can recommend a specialty shop.. IE Jackson Powertrain for drivetrain stuff like axles and driveshafts.

Give me a call any time you need more info. 601.594.7062

Hope to see you at a CottonLand event soon!

I second the Graves & Stoddard recommendation if you are going to pay somebody. Hope to meet you soon.

thanks for the welcome!
i am not sure what needs to be done. I can get the sucker to crank after numerous attempts with full choke. I actually got it up and down the street today, but it died and wouldn't start. I know very little about working on cars, but if i had to guess i would think it is a fuel mixture problem. It is like the engine is getting all the fuel it needs. A buddy told me a while back the carburetor was probably the culprit, but who knows. I am not quite ready to spend alot at the shop yet, i just started the whole homeowning thing and have little to spare.
I live off northside in NE Jackson, so if someone wants to come over and help me diagnose it would be much appreciated and rewarded with a cold beverage!

Thanks for the quick replies!

William,

You don't know what you are getting yourself in to offering beer for work. This crew will end up doing a full frame off or a makeing a real deal rock crawler out of that thing.

Sounds like carb problems to me too. Hang here on the web for a while, come to our next meeting, and I imagine pretty soon someone will be over at your place and have your truck running.

If it's carb problems the silver bullet is to pull the carb off (15 min job) and send it to Jim Chennowith (sp?). $300 later your carb is good as new. HeathRJ can hook you up with contact info for Jim.

Glad you found the CLC.

fj40jim@aol.com is Chenoweth's info. Choctaw talked to him Friday and he is sending his ove to him soon. He is the best! I wish I had used him beck when the Weber was purchased. Welcome to the madness and I will second the beer for work thing! We'll drink it for sure!

good to hear,
I am working on the fluids and filters right now to see if that helps any. I will definately get in touch with Chenoweth when I can afford to! Thanks for the info, and i ain't scared to hand out a few bricks if it means my cruiser is rolling.

I see, the beer starts flowing just as I leave town. I like BEER!!! Welcome HW. You'll get a kick out of our little club. There is a lot of collective TLC knowledge among us. I have to be honest from the start here though, I contribute very little of that knowledge. If you need someone to rebuild your carb, call someone else. If you need someone to drink up your beer, that is where I can be a true life saver. I look forward to meeting you.

I can't believe you didn't lie Terry! I am proud of you. You are making some real progress!

Welcome HW!

Oxford is a great place as you know. I was born there and moved to Jackson after the third grade. Went back to Ole Miss from '86 - '90 and loved almost every minute. Bodean will give you s**t cuz he went to MOO U (as did my wife and 2 brothers).

Try to make our next club meeting if you can. Look forward to meeting you.

Also, some of the guys in the club are better wrenchers than beer drinkers or comedians! But they try hard at all three.

I had to read back over it to make sure, but you're right. I didn't even make any misleading statements. That is progress indeed!!!
