Hello,

Not a Toyota owner yet, but hope to be soon. I have a Land Rover which I am crazy about, but it is time to rotate out and I dont think the LR3 is nearly as capable as the Discovery......so FJ Cruiser, here I come.

Any advice on factory options would really be welcome. I am definitely going with the skid plates, 4x4, diff lock, roof rack?(maybe not on the roof rack, I have seen some pretty cool after-market roof racks out there).

The dealer tells me that they cannot order the FJ with the black steel wheels.....I really dont want the alloys, would rather have the black steelies or get some ProComps or something. My plan is to either go with the ARB bull bar or maybe the Fonnesbeck Trail Series Bull Bar
( http://www.exp-one.com/FJCruiserbullbar.htm )
I am really leaning toward the latter. I would plan on the OME lift, as I installed that on my Rover and would plan on doing that as well.

I do have a few questions on some general stuff too:

True Fuel Economy - Give me some real world data....no jackrabbit starts, but a normal 70 - 75 miles an hour on the highway. I will be getting an automatic instead of manual transmission.

Tire size - How big can I go with no lift? What about with a 2" to 3" lift?

Tire type - Rover folks love the BFG AT and MT. I got the REVO AT's and really liked them. My FJ will be a DD so I need something that is going to last for a while.

Write me back.

Thanks JOHN

**I have a 2001 RR and a 2002 DII, and I really don't like the LR3 either. I DO like the RR sport however. My FJ has been a great DD and I have driven it on difficult trails even in stock form with no problems.

** When I ordered my FJ, the ARB rack was not available yet. As a matter of fact, I don't think anything was out except the factory rack. I ordered mine with the factory rack because I wanted something up there to use if I needed it. At $700 it is NOT a deal, it is cheap and if I were you I would get the ARB rack.

*The OME kit is a popular one, and it is the one I am going with as well. I am also going to upgrade the Upper and Lower control arms to the Total Chaos stuff as well. Also, check out the beefy rear heavy duty lower control arms at Man A Fre.

** I have manual. Past 65-70 your fuel economy goes down the drain. I noticed my FJ was drinking gasoline like crazy at 75mph.

Tire size - How big can I go with no lift? What about with a 2" to 3" lift?

**33"s and possibly to 35"s..... Depending on tire, whether or not you do the body mount modification etc.

Tire type - Rover folks love the BFG AT and MT. I got the REVO AT's and really liked them. My FJ will be a DD so I need something that is going to last for a while.

** I love the BFG Mud Terrains, and will probably go with something similar, if not BFGs on my FJ.

Yep, I saw the South Texas Rovers sigtn and I thought I might have met you. Have you ever been to any of the Dallas events in the past with Texas Rovers? Pretty good group, but i look forward to meeting some new folks with the local Lone Star Land Cruiser Clan here in Dallas.

Thanks for the feedback. I worked the deal a little bit with the dealer tonight, but they are really not interested in taking the Disco on trade, so I am going to sell it out right.

Talk to you soon and thanks again.

I am going to be joining Texas Rovers as well. I don't think we have met before, as I haven't been to Dallas for about 15 years ;)

Don't sell the Disco, unless it's a Series 1 and older (older than 2000). Our DII has been very reliable and have taken it on a number of trips off road.

We almost became a LSLC chapter. However the locals here decided to do our own club name etc and it ended up Alamo City Land Cruisers. I'm happy about it.

I get 19-21 mpg with my manual fj, usally 160 miles on a half a tank and 320 miles when the light comes on . Most if not all your 33's should fit with a 2-3 inch lift and 34's if you do the body mount chop. I'm running Dick Cepek FC-11's wich i recomend to anyone looking for a allterrain tire that does it all.
