Hi -
I'm new here and have just bought my second LC. My first one was a 1999 Series 100 that I had for seven years, but had to sell so that I could transport an elderly relative that came to live with us. Long-story short, she couldn't get up into it and we had a small garage, so my cruiser had to go. It was black, so that was a mistake but otherwise, it was the best vehicle I've ever owned.
Flash-forward to mid Feb 2017. I'm getting ready to retire and am shrinking our garage. My company car will be going away when I stop work, and my beloved 911 wasn't seeing much road time...so I chose return to the best vehicle I've ever owned/'driven: the Toyota Land Cruiser. And I made this decision without even a test drive.
From my past, I knew that a black LC would be a mistake. I took our last one out wheeling about a week into our time together, and got the sides scratched-up by brush...much to the chagrin of my wife. I was able to rub most of the scratches out, but every time I even got near dirt, the black paint showed dirt like crazy. So, this time I went with white exterior with a black interior.
Initial impressions: this thing is amazingly quiet and has a lot more power. The stereo is better than the last one, and the memory seats are great because my wife and I are completely different sizes. The gas mileage still stinks, but I save a bit by not having to buy premium fuel. In the past 400 miles, I've already had it up past the snow line into snow/ice single track and, even with the stock tires, it's amazing. I wish there was a way to easily remove the rear seats like with the 100 because it looks like when you unbolt the two rear seats, it'll leave holes in the carpet/rear sides. Also, I'm trying to figure out a way to remove the back seat video screens and cover the remaining holes, but don't want some sort of eye-sore left over.
I bought the extended warranty because of the amount of high-tech electrical stuff that could go wrong, plus my wife's RAV4 had many, many expensive repairs under the extended warranty that would have cost us > 3x the cost of purchase.
So - nice to meet you. I'll likely be looking for some more rugged tires (KO2's) when I wear out the OEM rubber, purchasing a set of snow tires next fall, be removing the 3rd row seats, and reading up around here on what other things I need to know about this new, wonderful LC.
