I don't know if anyone has used this software before, but I love it: ExpertGPS
It's a package that has three types of maps: topo, aerial photo and urban for some select cities. The topo and aerial maps have 3 or 4 different levels of detail and the most detailed of each is extremely sharp. The program pulls it's maps in blocks from their servers over the internet, but once you load a map, it's saved on the local machine so an internet connection is not required on the road. That was the main selling point for me.
I feel that this software is unique because it supports the NMEA standard for gps reciever communication, and therefore is brand independent. I have a DeluoGPS reciever, which communicates over usb but has a little piece of software that allows it to emulate a com port, making it usable with new and old programs.
On the road, this setup is extremely accurate!! It keeps track of my vehicle to within 2 meters or so, which I think is amazing.
I highly recommend it!!
