after our old friend died a couple of months ago, we decided not to get a dog till after our snowboard trip, so we wouldn't have to leave it at home... so guess what the family did on their way back from snowboarding, got a new dog.

we couldn't decide on type, i wanted a german shepard (alsation for those that don't know) my bro wanted either a boarder collie or a kelpie, my mum wanted a labradore, and my dad wanted nothing to do with the mess.

so we ended up finding a little guy who is a syberian husky x labradore... no pics yet, digi cam got busted snowboarding, but the vet recons he'll hit over 50 kilograms, he's only 8 weeks, and already 10 kilo's... so he's a big boy. pics to follow :flipoff2:

Siberian plus a Lab? Hmm. That ought to have a load of energy. Congrats!

That'll be an interesting mix. I swear they're the best. All the "purebreds" I've ever had were inbred freaks wtih eventual health problems.

should be cool... he is a lazy pup so far, he'll be bursting with energy for a few minutes then sleep for an hour or so... i have only had 2 dogs in my life (only 21 years) and my 1st was purebred germ shepard, which was awesome and lived for 15 years, other was a beagle x pointer that was ugly and ended up with bone cancer at 5... so i haven't had good luck with X's but this one is adorable

My current mutt is a rottweiler/malamute and he's great. At 9 years I've had him longer than I've had my kids! :) I've just had bad luck with pure breds. That being said my next dog of choice is a Belgian Melinois. I don't know if I spelled that right , but, that's what I want anyway.

Wife wants a fricken Chinese Crested. Whatever.

my bud has a border collie. I have always heard that they are smart, but i think smart is an understatement. I would swear that this dog knows english. It's almost as if you could cary on a conversation with him (no, havn't been drinking heavily). We were at the lake over the 4th of July, and there was this float floating in the cove of the lake. We were standing on the dock and i was kidding with my friend and said i bet the dog can't swim out there and pull the float back to the dock for us. he said even better, he'll tell the dog to sit on the float. So he told "vince" to go sit on the float, the damn dog swam out, and got on the float and sat there! I was like WTF! He can get beer out of the fridge and even shut the door behind him. I'm getting a border collie next!

Border collies are smart, but they are born and bred to bark and chase and nip at ankles.

And they do.

So, if you like incessant barking, irritating passing bicyclists, cars and walkers, law suits from bites, that's your dog. :D

i have a yellow lab now, and absolutely love him. He is like my kid. But, sometimes he can drive me up the wall. He's 8 months old and if there is anything in the back yard he will chew it up. Or, he'll try to dig to china. I came home the other day and he had dug a hole deep enough to fit his entire body down in. HE was just laying there chillin. If i take him anywhere there is water, he's wet! No questions asked, just don't let him see or smell water unless you want to dry him off. But seriously, he is just awesome.

Dave is right about border collies, they will drive you insane. Ours is super smart, but wears me out. Hell of a frisbee dog though.

HA-Ha! That will sure quiet them down. Will it work on a kid, too? :D

Many dog products work well on children. A wife's friend dropped a two-year old (human) by our house while she went shopping. We were working outside on the yard, and the kid kept running into the street. I told him that if he did it once more I was going to tie him to the tree. So, he did it again.

I went inside and got the padded pulling harness I use on my dogs in the winter and clipped him in. Then clipped a 15' tie out to a clothes line. He ran back and forth, back and forth.....

I love big dogs. I don't see much point in getting a small dog, but I'm snobbish like that. I will say however, my 37 lb husky (which just showed up on my doorstep one day) pulls a LOT harder on walks than my 105lb malamute. She routinely tackles him to the ground. She definately is the alpha dog of the pack.

Forgive the heep in the background- I've since seen the error of my ways...

Here's Mine.
He doubles as a security system:

He's a 5 y/o Belgian Malinois. He's either your best friend or your worst enemy. Sometimes he's both. He has a vocabulary bigger than many kids I've met and is the closest thing to a perpetual motion machine that I've come across.
Awesome Dog, but not for the faint of heart.

Yeah, you guys weren't supposed to see that, I use that when I treat my body like an amusement park. :flipoff2:

Careful, Steve There are innocent teens here who might get ideas!

mine is a aussie sheperd border collie mix of some sort. not really sure as we got her through a rescue group. absolutley ownderful dog. loves to play frisbee and is smart as hell. I dont have the barkign problem though the only time shebarks is if someone tries to come in the back yard. or if another dog (while we are out) tries to touch her toys. personally I love her to death and we have only had her for two years. heres a pic. this is form last springs trip to moab. on the upper loop of fins and things kind of by steel bender. that is me the mutt and my wonderful son.
Here is a big vote for aussie sheperd border collie mixes.
only down side is with kids running around they will herd them....
