A trail truck does not need axle gears. Axle gears help most on road and for the money a doubler or tcase gears are much better money spent.
A sawzall would be the best place to start. Fit the tires and cut until they clear. Weld the rear end and go wheel from there you will figure out what needs addressing. Things like steering, skid plate, bumpers etc.
You will have to address the steering if you are really going to wheel it hard.
 
That's entirely dependent on the terrain you wheel. If you mostly rock crawl and are only concerned with low range gearing, then I agree with above.
