I want to replace the top of my fj40 with a high top that extends half way over the hood. There is a fifthwheel horse trailer in a local junkyard that has some clean sheetmetal. I was thinking of cutting the front radiused bullnose off, narrowing it, and fitting it to my 40. Has anyone done this before?
Can someone photoshop something like that so I can see if it looks stupid? I want somthing that I can swap back and forth easily between roofcaps.

Reasonably knowledgable opinions, educated assumptions, and flat-out smartass responses welcomed.

If you get me side shots of your 40 and a side shot of the camper, I could 'shop it for you.

Have you considered the effect this will have on your center of gravity? I know a dude with a 40, and that thing is much tippier with the hard top on. I can only imagine what a sheetmetal high-top cab-over would do when you're off-camber.

Ditto! It will hate off-camber situations. If you could post some pics.

Thanks for the replies, but I've since read that Sketchup post and have been dinking around with that for a while.

So far ( I wish I could figure out how to post the drawing) I have added about 18" to the top of the 40. I kept the stock sides, but added the higher top and extended it over the hood about a foot.

The dork factor was pretty bad on my earlier drawings, but this one looks pretty good. I really am not worried about the center of gravity because I intend to just keep bedding up there. I just need a place to sleep flat. Dang back of mine cant take the ground anymore...

My Sister was concerned that it would cause drag and reduce mileage. Like if I worried about mileage, would I even start the stinkin thing? Sheesh! I get 13 mpg...

ever think about fiberglass ? lighter than steel, if you have a roll bar ir sould just bolt on with some tinkering, assuming you geta roof that fits or make a frame and apply the fiber glass yourself
